Huge Underground "Ocean" Found Beneath Asia

Richard A. Lovett
for National Geographic News

February 27, 2007
A giant blob of water the size of the Arctic Ocean has been discovered hundreds of miles beneath eastern Asia, scientists report.
Researchers found the underground "ocean" while scanning seismic waves as they passed through Earth's interior.

But nobody will be exploring this sea by submarine. The water is locked in moisture-containing rocks 400 to 800 miles (700 to 1,400 kilometers) beneath the surface.....

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Canary Islands (AP) _ British scientists have embarked on a mission to study a gigantic hole in the Atlantic seabed _ an enigma that defies traditional geophysical theory and will give researchers an unprecedented look into the center of the Earth.
The 12-person team left the Canary Islands Monday with a new high-tech vessel and a robotic device named Toby that will dig up rock samples at the bottom of the crater and film what it sees.

Ants Test Nonviolence of Buddhist Monks

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- Buddhist monks, who are bound by faith to nonviolence, are grappling with how to rid a temple of a severe ant infestation without killing the insects.
Stinging red ants have plagued the Hong Hock See Temple in northern Penang state for a year, causing one worshipper to be bitten so badly last month that he had to receive hospital treatment, said Elma Lin, a temple volunteer worker.......

Pentagon plans cyber-insect army

By Gary Kitchener

The Pentagon's defence scientists want to create an army of cyber-insects that can be remotely controlled to check out explosives and send transmissions.

The idea is to insert micro-systems at the pupa stage, when the insects can integrate them into their body, so they can be remotely controlled later.

Archaeological Remains Point To Exact Location Of Second Temple Of Jerusalem

Science Daily — While scholars have put forth various assessments for the location of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, a Hebrew University of Jerusalem professor says that archaeological remains that have so far been ignored by scholars point to the exact location, which is in a spot that differs from prevailing opinion.

The location identified by Prof. Joseph Patrich of the Hebrew University Institute of Archaeology places the Temple and its corresponding courtyards, chambers and gates in a more southeasterly and diagonal frame of reference than have earlier scholars.......

Photo in the News: Colossal Squid Caught off Antarctica

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/02/070222-squid-pictures.html
(see above site for entire story)
February 22, 2007—In Antarctica's Ross Sea, a fishing boat has caught what is likely the world's biggest known colossal squid (yes, that's the species' name), New Zealand officials announced today. Heavier than even giant squid, colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni) have eyes as wide as dinner plates and sharp hooks on some of their suckers. The new specimen weighs in at an estimated 990 pounds (450 kilograms).

STEREO Eclipse
NASA's STEREO-B spacecraft was about a million miles from Earth last month when it photographed the Moon passing in front of the sun. The resulting movie looks like it came from an alien solar system.

Explanation: A million miles from planet Earth, last weekend the STEREO B spacecraft found itself in the shadow of the Moon.
So, looking toward the Sun, extreme ultraviolet cameras onboard STEREO B were able to record a stunning movie of a lunar transit
(aka solar eclipse), as the Moon tracked across the solar disk. Each frame of the movie is a false-color composite of images
made through four different filters that highlight temperature regimes and structures in the upper solar atmosphere.
In this frame, large bright active regions, seen as dark sunspots in visible light, flank the Moon's silhouetted disk.
The Moon appears small, less than 1/4th the size seen from Earth, because the spacecraft-Moon separation is over four times the Earth-Moon distance.

The one site allows you to see it on video....

In lice, clues to human origin and attire

By Nicholas Wade
Published: March 8, 2007
dot_h.gif

One of the more embarrassing mysteries of human evolution is that people are host to no fewer than three kinds of louse while most species have just one.
Even bleaker for the human reputation, the pubic louse, which gets its dates and residence-swapping opportunities when its hosts are locked in intimate embrace, does not seem to be a true native of the human body. Its closest relative is the gorilla louse. (Don't even think about it.)
Louse specialists now seem at last to have solved the question of how people came by their superabundance of fellow travelers. And in doing so they have shed light on the two major turning points in the history of fashion: when people lost their body hair, and when they first made clothing.
Three kinds of louse call Homo sapiens their home, but each occupies a different niche on the human body. The head louse, Pediculus humanus, lives in the forest of fine hairs on the scalp. Its cousin, the body louse, lives not on the skin but in clothes....

THOUSANDS of people gazed in awe as the skies remained clear for the most spectacular lunar eclipse in more than a decade.

The first total eclipse of the moon in three years was visible across swathes of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland last night thanks to crisp weather.

The surface of the full Moon first went dark before turning a coppery red, to the delight of thousands of people who had stayed up to watch the display.
