Should Men Shake Hands or Hug?

When did the world become so huggy? I've met people for the first time, and they want to hug me! It's odd.

My guess is that the feminizing of culture has led to this current hugfest.

My motto is, why hug when a handshake will do. (stole that line from Frasier)

Depends on the cultural context and the closeness of relationship between the 2 men hugging. Hugging is not necessarily a feminine thing, nor is hugging a denial of manhood. In Jesus time, those close to one another in relationship greeted one another with a holy kiss (and there was nothing homosexual about such a thing) it was simply a cultural thing.

I just don't see sensitivity and warmth as being particularly feminine, not unless you have really rigid ideas of what male gender should be.

Northern European people don't engage in a lot of physical contact. But not everybody in the US is from northern European ethnicities.

One exception I see is in some evangelical religious circles, men from northern European backgrounds hug each other. I've never been that involved in that sort of religion, but I've seen it to know its not that rare.

I never said it was strictly a feminine thing. What I said was that I have noticed in recent years that people are hugging in situations where they used to shake hands.

I understand your theory, but my observation, and personal life as a USMC veteran athlete, doesn't support it. I've seen typically men who are most secure in their masculinity are also most comfortable hugging.

Doubt you'd call any of the below "feminized" men.

Are hugs involved in sports matches the same as those in other social situations, say, business meetings, or personal introductions?

Are they affectionate embraces or celebratory displays?

I recently read a medical study that stated that it is better to hug or kiss someone rather than high five or shake hands because of the germs transmitted and the bonding. In fact, the Bible speaks of greeting one another with a Holy Kiss.
