Scam Alert: Prayer Rug and St. Matthew

Today, I recieved in the mail envelope from St. Matthew's Church,Tulsa, OK with a paper prayer rug promising health and wealth if I just pray on it and send it back in with some money. The enclosures looked liked something out of a tabloid.

The letter almost implies that money should be given, but it would probably be the start of more letters if I were to mail it back.

The biggest, and most explicit deception is that it mentions nothing about God's will and says that we can get whatever we pray for, and it places the power of prayer in the rug, rather than in God.

Rather, it confines God to a piece of paper, and promotes concieted, selfish prayers.


Most of the Lords prayer is about God's Glory, the prayer starts with and ends with him. And the middle part is about loving others and being sinless. Only a fraction has to do with needs.

I googled for the prayer rug, but not for the church by itself.

The local news here is doing a story on this "prayer rug" tonight.

These things pop up from time to time. A few years ago it was a paper hankie with an icon image on it. Before that it was some scrap that supposedly had been blessed by a saint. I circular file all of them.

The church does not seem to exist, I could not find any Chruch in OK with "St Matthew" in its name.

Did you ever see Snake Oil the Robert Tilton fanzine by the "recreational Christian" who called himself Brother Randall of the Robert Tilton Fan Club? It was hilarious. The account of him and his friends meeting Tilton at Tilton's daughter's wedding was enough to make tears run down your face. There are also videos of Tilton, Benny Hinn, Jonathan Bell, and other out-of-the-mainstream evangelists available from The Door.
