He was a tyrant who headed a state run as a Kleptocracy. All signifigant power has been distributed to or carved up by compeating factions of the royal family. When the kingship descends far enough down the lineage all but one of those factions is going to be cut off. Dont forget how much millitary equipment has been pumped into SA in just the last few years. Can anyone say civil war is not a very strong possibility very soon.
Wahabism has been promoted by the state because one of its main tenents is subservience to authority. Some quite nasty side effects of this have been in the news for the last 13 or 14 years.

Speaking of which, I wonder how that poor Saudi blogger is doing against those lashings for speaking his mind?

Good point, making out with Saudi dictators is apparently a very presidential thing to do.

If a Saudi Arabian man kisses a girl in public, he gets a slow death via the torture of 1,000 slashes.

If a Saudi Arabian man kisses another man, he gets a slow death via the torture of stoning.

If an American man kisses a Saudi Arabian prince or king in public, he gets 2 million barrels of oil per day.

A dictator and sponsor of extremism and repression passes. Good riddance. Though there are plenty more waiting in the wings, so nothing will change.

And Obama is immediately making his way to pay his respects to both Abdullah and Salman. He can't stand with world leaders in response to the Paris attacks and the loss of life there but he can stand with Muslim leaders to mourn the loss of King Abdullah.

Quote:

CNN)U.S. President Barack Obama will travel to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday in order to meet the newly appointed monarch, King Salman, and pay his respects to the family of the late King Abdullah, the White House said Saturday.

Vice President Joe Biden was originally set to have led a delegation to Saudi Arabia on Obama's behalf.

However, the schedule for the President's departure from India has been adjusted to allow Obama to stop in Riyadh himself on his way home, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said.

Interesting to note Obama was in India when this decision was made. One of the arguments made in defense of no high ranking official, such as, say, John Kerry, from the administration going to Paris was that the Secretary of State was in India, and it would be near impossible to get from India to Paris.

Guess not when it is for something considered important.

You sound surprised.

Oh no! Really? A President of the United States of America bending over backwards for the Saudi tryrants?!? What has this world come to!

Although, unlike his more privileged predecessor, President Obama is not a family friend of the House of Saud, the poor self-made guy is trying hard to keep those barrels coming!

I think we've learned this a long time ago.
