Russia will never let anyone falsify history of Second World War

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree to establish a special committee to counteract the attempts of distorting history to the detriment of Russia’s interests. It was an expected decision: Medvedev has made a number of statements recently about the inadmissibility to falsify historical facts and events.

And the prize goes to...

Natalia Narochnitskaya, Doctor of Historical Sciences, said that such a committee should have been established long ago. If the current state of affairs is preserved in the future, the specialist said, it will not be a surprise if the next generation finds it difficult to say who waged war against whom.

“They will think that democratic countries were waging war against two totalitarian monsters that were fighting for reign,” Narochnitskaya said.

Ah, yes, when, oh when :swoon: will the Russian neighbours learn that it was the totalitarian Finland (pop. 3.5 million) that attacked and engaged Stalin's totally democratic Soviet Union (pop. 170 million) in order to extend the Finnish sphere of influence from the Baltic Sea to Ural to all the way to the Pacific and the Black Sea.

Perhaps someone should e-mail Ms. Narochnitskaya, Historian, Diplomat, and Duma 'MP', the copies of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact...?

Caution there, friend. "Ruskie" is en ethnic s-l-u-r; no need to stoop to that level. After all, the poor Soviet soldiers sent to the Finnish front were just as much victims of Stalin's aggression as Mr. Häyhä there. /:preach:

Actually in the US it is a cold war term that I have never heard used as a slur. Maybe in a hyper PC sense it might be but frankly I could care less and if you are so easily offended (not you personally) then you really should not be on the internet.

Welcome to the forums, I have been cited for posting in a "forbidden area", even though it was the "ask a fundie" section. Justice is less than even handed to say the least.

Oops.

At the point where Russia had signed a non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany and split Poland between them, Stalin annexed Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, and demanded Finland trade about 10% of its land area (including about 14% of its population) for a thinly-populated forested area further north. Finland refused, Russia invaded, got its rear end handed to it, poured in more troops, and finally took Finland by attrition to the treaty table. France and Britain made noises about helping Finland but never got there.

Later, when Hitler invaded Russia, Finland took advantage of this to renew the war and try to get back the territory taken. So they were technically allied to the Nazis -- but only by the accidents of history.

(The Churchill-Mannerheim correspondence is rather interesting reading -- two men with great mutual respect placed by fate on opposite sides, each allied to a dictator and ideology he greatly disliked.)

Thank you. I remember seeing some listings that put Finland as an Axis power and it really never made sense to me. Now it does.

You know, I could go on and on on that topic since I (unfortunately :D) never shy away/cannot walk away from the opportunity to give "Finnish history lessons" to unsuspecting foreigners. Alas, it would derail this thread. But should you have any questions, any questions at all, see you on the "History" forum...

They were co belligerents, not really allied.
