National Journal is reporting that Sargent Shriver has died. I hope you will join me in praying for the repose of his soul. Sargent Shriver was a daily communicant.

He might best be known for marrying into the Kennedy family. His wife, Eunice, was the sister of President John F. Kennedy. (Eunice preceded her Sargent in death by two years.) Sargent Shriver became the first head of the Peace Corps. And because of his familial relationship, he became George McGovern’s running mate in 1972 (after Eagleton was dropped from the ticket and no one else wanted the job). Perhaps he’s also known for being the father of Maria Shriver, and thus father-in-law of Arnold Schwarzenegger.)

But I hope that’s not all you come to know about this man and his legacy. He and his wife founded the Special Olympics. The Special Olympics were important to Eunice, whose sister, Rosemary, was mentally handicapped. The Special Olympics has done much to educate Americans of the dignity that all persons have, regardless of any physical setback.

As the Democratic candidate for vice president in 1972, Sargent Shriver remains to this day the last pro-life candidate to run on the presidential ticket as a Democrat.

Pro-Life Liberal Sargent Shriver Dies; Democratic Challenger to Obama Emerges

Eunice and Sargent Shriver were Pro-Life Democrats. There was another interesting news story on the same day of the sad news of the passing of Sargent Shriver which has implications for the Democratic Primaries for President. Because I would still like to see Pro-Life people in both parties, I believe it is time to shake them both up.The first challenger to President Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination has emerged, Randall Terry, the long time Pro-Life champion.

Father Raymond J. de Souza

It was the brother-in-law who ennobled the family. Sargent Shriver married Eunice Kennedy in 1953, seven years after going to work for her father, Joseph P. Kennedy. A decorated veteran and outstanding executive in his own right, Shriver would often be considered an appendage to the famous family — a man dominated by his wife and the junior partner to the brothers Kennedy. But it was Sarge who lived the life of public service and personal integrity the brothers Kennedy only pretended to. Sarge, who died Tuesday at the age of 95, was the son that the corrupt Kennedy patriarch never deserved to have.

“Sarge regards serving Eunice and serving God; Eunice regards Sarge as her spiritual and intellectual anchor. Theirs is a formidable marriage,” wrote Shriver’s biographer, Scott Stossel.

They were formidable indeed. When launching the Peace Corps, JFK turned to Shriver to be its first director. Later, in the Johnson administration, Shriver was the first director of the Office of Economic Opportunity and the architect of the War on Poverty. From there, he launched many of America’s signature social programs, including Head Start, Job Corps, Legal Services and Upward Bound. From 1968 to 1970, he was American ambassador in Paris, and in 1972 the vice-presidential nominee on the George McGovern ticket. Meanwhile, his wife would launch the Special Olympics, in which he would take a leadership role until his retirement in the mid-1990s.

Washington D.C., Jan 21, 2011 / 06:08 am (CNA).- Catholic politician and public servant Robert Sargent Shriver died on Jan. 18 at the age of 95 in Bethesda, Maryland. He was remembered for his faith and leadership, his service to the poor and his prominent stand as a pro-life Democrat.

“Today we mourn the passing of one of America’s most beloved and respected citizens,” Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston, commented.

Shriver was born to a prominent Maryland family on Nov. 9, 1915. He was educated in law at Yale University and served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during the Second World War. He married Eunice Kennedy in the early 1950s and served on the Catholic Interracial Council of Chicago. His brother-in-law, President John F. Kennedy, appointed Shriver to create the Peace Corps program which sends American volunteers to developing countries to teach and to work on community projects.
