Dr. Kenneth Hagin Sr. is considered by many to be the "father" of the Word of Faith movement, but his impact on the charismatic church goes far deeper than that.

From his humble beginnings as a sickly child to his astounding conversion story to his early ministry as an itinerant Bible teacher and traveling evangelist, Hagin learned faith and patience as he continued to grow into the spiritual leader he would soon become.

A strong believer in the power of faith and of the spoken word, Hagin taught the power of "positive confession." With a laid-back preaching style and a healing ministry that drew thousands to his crusades, Hagin quickly became a sought-after figure. In 1963, he established the Kenneth E. Hagin Evangelistic Association—now known as Kenneth Hagin Ministries—through which he broadened his reach via radio sermons, television programs, the Word of Faith monthly magazine and a publishing house.

In addition to his crusades, media broadcasts, teaching and other activities, Hagin was a highly accomplished author, with dozens of books to his credit. Despite helping to pioneer the Word of Faith movement, Hagin was a humble man who lived relatively simply. Perhaps stemming from his own meager origins, Hagin was, by all accounts, far more interested in following the move of the Spirit than any sort of personal legacy or gain, likely another trait that drew so many to what he had to say. Though he passed away in 2003, his work lives on. Through the organizations, programs, and publications he founded, as well as in the leaders, ministries and movements he so profoundly influenced, Hagin's profound faith continues to make its mark on countless believers worldwide.—Jeremy Burns

Okay SP, up until my post there have been 47 views and no replies; does this mean that we've been unwilling to upset the applecart or should this thread take off in another direction?

I dunno, my apple cart is quite fine thank you. There are probably 20-25 of the 40 mentioned in the article that people on this board would have issue with for one reason or another. That's OK.

The article deals with Ministers who have changed the world. Charismatic and others.

Let's look at his life's work and the fruit therein

Ordained a Baptist Minister in 1939, soon there after got 'the left foot of fellowship' because of his Charismatic views and became part of the early assemblies of God. Pastored until 1949 when God called him into itinerate ministry. Was part of the great healing revival and close associates with Oral Roberts, T. L. Osborn and a number of others.

Started his evangelic organization in 1963 in Tulsa and then Rhema Bible Training Center in 1975. Continued to travel for the rest of his life. Started KHM (Kenneth Hagin Ministries), healing school in 1979 that continues today. They carried a documented 79% success rate with terminal patients of all kinds.

Rhema Bible training Center in now in

They are currently approaching 100,000 people that they have trained globally for the work of the ministry.

And BTW the curriculum is based of the Assemblies of God Schools. In fact they use the same books.

So, if you want to examine the man's legacy for touching the world, I'd love to, I just hope it doesn't upset an apple cart that only wants to bring out things settled 20 years ago.

Thanks!

That's certainly interesting! As each AoG college would choose books/commentaries to suit their own individual thinking, then this would mean that there would be a wide range to choose from. As you probably been out of college for a while then I would not expect you to know what books Rhema (USA) are using but if you do come across an easy list of books this would be something that would certainly interest me.

A couple of years back I went and checked out the (single?) Rhema Bible school here in Australia which was then running out of a small single dwelling in Brisbane but Google maps now shows that they are in a larger factory.

I've just tried to check out some of the new developments within Rhema Australia but their websites are far from being user-friendly where I gave up trying to find a Rhema church in my city. It appears that Rhema might have about six congregations in Australia and if I can ever work out if (and where) they have one near me in Melbourne then I wouldn't mind going for a visit. I seem to recall having similar problems with their website(s) a couple of years back as well.

When I went there for school and a number of years later when I taught theology we used. "Foundations of Pentecostal Theology" by van Cleaf and "Bible Doctrines" by PC Nelson.

Both are available on line bookstores

I noticed that church earlier where they were supposed to be meeting in a hotel room. As you can see in the video, they seem to be little more than a homegroup and if they are the 'only' Rhema congregation in Melbourne it does beg the question as to why. In all honesty, I don't think that we would be all that comfortable walking into this type of setting.

There is a church in Ringwood which is in the Eastern part of Melbourne called Grow Church that I thought was at least once a part of the Rhema network but their website shows that they are now a part of the "International Network of Churches". Maybe my wife and I should give them a visit as they have been there for a number of years so maybe it might give me an opportunity to find out more about them.

Why would it be the only Rhema church in Melbourne??

Did you think all of them are multiple mega churches in every city?
That's a fair question. I suppose that I can be a bit suspicious when a particular work has been established for awhile, which I think has been the situation with this particular Rhema work in East Doncaster and the church only comprises a dozen or so members. With this particular church, as they would be promoting a positive faith message and that they are Pentecostal, then I would have to ask why their message has been deemed to be so unnattractive that it has only attracted a few people.

There are probably many similar small churches on the go who are a dozen or two strong but if they are promoting a strong faith message then it does beg the question as to why they are so small after having been around for awhile.

As my wife and I have been attending a well established mega-church for the past 14 years, I know that it can be easy to expect all the bells and trimmings but I'm probably of the opinion that if a church has been around for a reasonable amount of time in a large city where it hasn't been able to show any evidence of growth, then if it is a Pentecostal church in particular, then maybe it could be wise to leave it alone.

None of which negates the facts of the OP.
I suppose the point of your thread has not really been addressed where it does not really matter how anyone might feel about Hagins core teachings as undoubtedly he has played a major part with the formation of the contemporary church.

As for the apparent lack of inroads with regard to Rhema based churches, or for that matter, with word of faith congregations here in Australia, this is something that I have noticed over the years and I really would have thought that the opposite would have been the case.

My Pastor said Hagin read the NT through (cover to cover) 100 times before he started preaching.

This may be ONE reason he's had such an impact on the world with his Bible-based teaching.

I like his simple faith-empowered teachings and writings.

Hagin is easy to understand.

He has a gift for making scripture easily applicable.

His wife shared that he would read the book of psalms every night before going to bed. The whole thing.
Would that maybe be one psalm each and not so much the entire psalms? In all honesty, I think that if someone were to say that before they were about to go bed that we had to read the entire book of Psalms, that this could be reason for praying for insomnia, where, "Darling, you go to bed now and I will join you in about six hours".

If this is as what you say, then my hat goes off to both of them!

 He might have been a speed reader.

I can speed read an entire book of the Bible very quickly.

I'll try Psalms this week and see how long it takes me.

I've listened to the testimony of a man who would speed read the Bible by pulling a ruler quickly down the Bible.

I forget his name right now.

I learned his technique and it really does work.

I think I have his cassette still somewhere.

He claims one of the benefits of speed reading the Bible are you can get an overall picture very quickly which helps with more accurately understanding scripture.

Slow reading has it's benefits too.

No, it was the entire book. It takes less than an hour to read it.

He was the only preacher I know who could quote entire chapters of scripture verbatim. Some of which he could quote two and three versions of which.

I watched him quote Acts 18, 19 word for word and never look at his Bible.

I wish I had that kind of memory.

That's really interesting. Being someone who struggles to accurately recall even those verses that I should know well, I'm never sure if I should admire people who can do this or if I am permitted to 'feel sorry for myself'.

That would certainly explain how he was able to copy Kenyon's work into his own books so meticulously.
