The most historically significant: Putin taking Obama to the woodshed over Syria.

That particular nuclear earthquake had repercussions as far as Germany where they have closed down a perfectly safe and paid for nuclear power industry as a result.

In my mind too many to just pick one. But one of the big ones was something we always suspected, just how much we are being spied on by the NSA. Thank you Edward Snowden!

I am just rereading "Body of Secrets" published at the beginning of the last decade. Edward Snowdens words were hardly a surprise to me as the NSA has been doing this for a very long time. What was significant following the wikileaks etc was that the public reaction (at least in Europe) was more concerned than they were say 10 years ago and also it seems the Americans are spying on allies like Germany who they clearly do not regard as that trustworthy. I suppose we have been sold a load of blah by various mobile sales men and computer sales men that the systems they were selling were secure but actually they were not 10 years ago and they are not now

Four big things come to mind. (mind you that these are all very US centric)

    1. The US was on another WMD charge to war, but amazingly, did the right thing and backed off.
    2. The Edward Snowden revelations.
    3. The thaw in relations between the US and Iran.
    4. Bradley Manning's trial and sentencing.

And on a lighter note, but still very important to me.

    5. Leon F.C. won the Mexican first division. After spending ten difficult years stuck in the second division, they won promotion back to the first division in 2012 and won the first division title in 2013.

Yes the Iranian election result seems to have changed the situation.

The wikileaks revelations were interesting and mainly revealed a fairly balanced perspective from the diplomats in the various lands commentated on. But they probably endangered various US operatives and undermined the reputation of the USA in some countries. Though to be honest you could probably have guessed their views in 90% of the cases revealed. Manning himself is rather wierd as his sex change demos. America has never been very good at keeping secrets and the KGB were reading most of their messages for much of the Cold war for instance.

Sounds like a success story to me :)

I'm pretty sure the biggest story of 2013 had something to do with Beyonce

I apologize for being such a terrible nitpick, but Fukushima, although feeling like just yesterday, happened back in 2011.

I'll comp. Snowden and perhaps Pope Franciscus, for their long-lasting global impact.

Francis' papacy maybe, we have a while to see how well he does in the chair of St.Peter.

I think Snowden was the biggest story of 2013....and exposed the Obama governments "Say one thing,do something different" style politics that got the GOP into trouble in the 80's and in Dubya's tenure.
