Jesus said to let your light shine before men so that people may see your good deeds and praise your father in heaven. But in another verse he says if you give to the poor to be seen by men, you will not get a reward in heaven. And he also says don't let your right hand know what your left hand is doing.

I am not quite understanding what he is saying there. First, he says show your good deeds so that men can see you do good and glorify God. And then he says do your good deeds in secret. Can you explain to me what he means in these passages?

Hi,

We are to let our light shine meaning to be like Jesus to a world that is cold, so they will see Him in us.

The second verse is about what we do, not taking credit for things, but giving God the glory. When others (non-Christians) see us acting like the world, taking credit for the great things we may do, they see it as we are seeking glory for ourselves. God says that we will get our reward from Him in heaven, so we are not to take glory for the things that we do that are good here on earth, for others to see 'how good we are', but to remain humble as Jesus was.

Does that make sense?

Yes it does. Thank you
