It appears not only the mayor but the head of HHS in Washington estimated the deaths would be that high:

WASHINGTON - Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt said Sunday the death toll from Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath is in the thousands, the first time a federal official has acknowledged what many had feared.

Leavitt said he couldn't provide a precise number on the impact of the devastation, but when asked if it was in the thousands, he told CNN's "Late Edition," "I think it's evident it's in the thousands."

It appears that even Fox News, surely not the liberal media, was reporting that the death toll would be that high:

Official: Death Toll in Thousands

As reported by Fox news. So it appears that this is the information that ALL the news agencies were working with.

Did you happen to notice they cut off the story after Leavitt's comment?

And btw what's this? Not my words. This is not about the people or party I support (notice the Indy?), this is about my Country. Lets face the facts here, the majority of the media would be much happier if they lived in Cuba. If it were not for their hearts desire to turn the US into a Cuban utopia, they would have left us years ago for the *cough* lush green fields of Cuba.

What are you even talking about? Wow....

Of course I did. So in other words, just like the rest of the media, they reported the fact, that someone in authority, in this case from the federal government, estimated that the deaths would be that high.

They reported what the guy actaully said, "in the thousands." A far stretch from the hysteria spread in the MSM.

That's the same exact thing CNN did when I was watching. They reported that the death toll could rise to the thousands, and quoted the Mayor.

More from FOX News:

Soldiers toting M-16s strengthened their grip on New Orleans (search) as concerns grew about the risks posed by the toxic floodwaters and officials braced for what could be a staggering death toll by readying 25,000 body bags. Across miles of ravaged neighborhoods of clapboard houses, grand estates and housing projects, workers struggled to find corpses and convince the city's last stubborn residents to leave. Molly Henneberg has a report.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,168900,00.html

Another story:

The near-conclusion of the voluntary evacuation came as receding floodwaters revealed still more rotting corpses. Nagin has said the death toll in New Orleans alone could reach 10,000, and state officials were ordering 25,000 body bags.

Volunteer rescuer Gregg Silverman, part of a 14-boat contingent from Columbus, Ohio, said he expected to find many more survivors in his excursion through the city's flooded streets. Instead, he found mostly bodies.

"They had me climb up on a roof, and I did bring an ax up to where a guy had tried to stick a pipe up through a vent," Silverman said. "Unfortunately, he had probably just recently perished. His dog was still there, barking. The dog wouldn't come. We had to leave the dog just up there in the attic."

As for other bodies his group encountered: "Obviously we are not recovering them. We are just tying them up to banisters, leaving them on the roof."

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,168857,00.html

Another: In New Orleans, Nagin upticked his estimate of the probable death toll in his city from merely thousands, telling NBC's "Today" show, "It wouldn't be unreasonable to have 10,000." http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,168489,00.html

As for me, I don't see it as liberal or conservative. It's a matter of the media (and a few on here, I might add) doing the 'Chicken Little' routine. Speculating and publicly predicting a worse case scenario may draw viewers, but it doesn't help matters, it makes matters worse. I was skeptical of the 10k figure when it came out, and even said on the CF, 'let's wait for the numbers come out' before we start quoting them. This 'race for the story' routine the media has fallen into hurt them during the 2000 election. It appears they haven't learned. Wonder how many across the board goofs we can expect from them before they change priorities? Quite a few more, I suspect.

I agree that all media sources speculate on various outcomes of situations. Just as they all decide which stories to cover and how much attention to give them. I am often dismayed by lack of hard news from all sources, especially during times like when the Jackson trial was running.

Still in this particular story all the news coverage that I saw was reporting what various public figures said. The fact is we don't know what the death toll will be. It will still be awhile before the city is pumped out and family members can be reunited with each other, and report who is still missing.

I am sure we are all praying that the numbers will be much lower than intially feared, just as they were on 9-11. But the media can only go with the best information that they have at the time.

Get? you mean they had. Maybe Halliburtom caused the hurricane?? :p
Duh, that's why they Halliburton manufactures body bags. They let New Orleans become chaotic so people would buy their body bags afterwards - and with the death toll in the 10,000's, who could argue with that!

The Vast Rightwing Conspiracy strikes again.

Don't give the Bush-Bashers on here any ideas.
They've probably started the thread already.

Maybe so. All I have to go by is what you post and that is the impression I get from your posts.

Faith_Warrior said:
Simple point is that the media thrives on the sewage they claim is their truth. They trump up their dire estimates or feed upon erogenous claims of others and suggest some action needs to be taken in the face of a human tragedy.
Erogenous claims? Excuse me, but I guess I hadn't heard any erogenous claims about the death toll in NO. What kind of media have you been watching, anyway?

Secondly, how in the heck do you know how many have died? Most of NO is still under water. None of us know what the total death toll is going to be, but it is already high, and it is already a tragedy in the eyes of any decent person and doesn't have to be thousands to be a tragedy.

Faith_Warrior said:
The real truth is that many in the liberal socialist media outlets are nothing but vampires feeding on the confusion they can present and exacerbate to further their cause and goals.
You are the only one that seems to be feeding on anything here. You seem to be feeding on this tragedy and using it to promote some wierd political agenda.
