It is a bit confusing, but the vast majority, including most Jews, is that its not a ethnicity, but a religion. Its more like a "family". Anyone of any race can convert to it. Just try a yahoo search out there and see what pops up.

If Jewish is a religion, not an ethnicity, why are non religious people who grew up in Jewish families, also considered Jews?

First of all the religion is Judaism. People are considered Jews because of their ethno-religious heritage. Almost all Jews -- I'm sure there are some exceptions -- observe Passover, Rosh Hashanah, and Yom Kippur, the same as almost all Christians observe Christmas and Easter.
