Dismay as Gadhafi chosen to lead African Union
Gadhafi, once ostracized by the West for sponsoring terrorism, has been trying to increase both Libya's global stature and its regional influence mediating African conflicts, sponsoring efforts to spread Islam on the continent and pushing for the creation of a single African government.
Still, African leaders offered tepid praise for the choice of the strongman who grabbed power in a 1969 coup.

In a speech delivered on Tuesday in Mauritania, Libyan leader Mouammar Gaddafi affirmed the Islamic teaching that portions of the Bible have been forged and altered by Jews and Christians down through the centuries, including the deletion of verses referring to the coming of the prophet Muhammad. He claimed that the Koran showed that there were no differences between Islam and Moses and his closest followers because they were Muslims. If they had lived during the era of Muhammad, they would have believed in him. Likewise, there is no problem with Jesus and the other prophets, all of them being Muslims and Muhammad the seal of the prophets," Gaddafi said, citing standard Islamic teachings. He said the discord was between us and those who refused to follow Muhammad, who is the messenger of the Jews, Christians and the entire mankind. He also blamed the abuses of colonialism in Africa on Christianity. The young [African] children have been fooled in the colonial schools and embraced Christianity without their parents knowing and without any conviction, the movement of Christian evangelization in Africa having served as a prelude to colonization and having developed under the colonial protection that was stifling Africa.
