An IRS phone scam has been making the rounds in Northeast Wisconsin and duping people into giving out personal information.
Officials are telling residents that if they receive a phone call from anyone claiming to be from the IRS, they should hang up immediately.
But the Dodge County sheriff had a different solution. He decided to call the number back and confront the caller.
Thursday morning, Sheriff Dale Schmidt said he received a voicemail message from a person saying the IRS had filed a lawsuit against him and instructed him to call a number back to get more information.
Sheriff Schmidt said when he called the number back, a woman answered by saying, "Internal Revenue Service."
Sheriff Schmidt asked if there was a way to verify that she was from the IRS and her response was, "it is not our job to verify who we are" and they hung up.
