An IRS phone scam has been making the rounds in Northeast Wisconsin and duping people into giving out personal information.

Officials are telling residents that if they receive a phone call from anyone claiming to be from the IRS, they should hang up immediately.

But the Dodge County sheriff had a different solution. He decided to call the number back and confront the caller.

Thursday morning, Sheriff Dale Schmidt said he received a voicemail message from a person saying the IRS had filed a lawsuit against him and instructed him to call a number back to get more information.

Sheriff Schmidt said when he called the number back, a woman answered by saying, "Internal Revenue Service."

Sheriff Schmidt asked if there was a way to verify that she was from the IRS and her response was, "it is not our job to verify who we are" and they hung up.

It's nationwide. Trust me, if the IRS has something for you, it will come certified mail.

I got the phone call the weekend after submitting my taxes. I called back because I like to play with phone scammers, but the person said, "This is the IRS...," then they hung up. I kept calling back, the person picked up again, answered, but hung up. I kept calling the number back until I was blocked it seems. Victory.

The only scam phone calls I get are from the "Microsoft Tech Support" people.

Every time they call me it's someone with a strong Indian accent, which is fortunate because it's hard to understand them most of the time.

It means I end up asking them to repeat themselves ad-nauseum while I "follow" their instructions much more time consuming until the point at which I get bored and start asking actual technical questions and they realize I'm not the prey they are looking for.

My favorite one was when I kept the guy on the phone for 15 minutes then told him I didn't have a computer, well that and the one who I told that my internet wasn't working so I couldn't go to the website that they would used to hijack my computer so she spent 10 minutes trying to troubleshoot what the problem was. Made her so mad she hung up on me.

They don't call me anymore, that's sad.
