i grew up listening everything from bluegrass, Johnny Cash, Nelson , Jennings and Deep Purple growing up. My mom was a southern hippy chick. Cash: "I hurt myself today..." I'm on a kick. I think I may be turning into my mother.
Might be time for a check up.
Hurt is my all-time favorite Johnny Cash song. I never met my maternal grandpa, he died 11 years before I was born, but my mom always talks about how big of a Johnny Cash fan he was, so when I listen to him I feel a bit of a connection with my grandpa. Plus my grandpa looked a lot like Johnny Cash, whether that was by accident or design, I don't know.
I remember listening to something from Rob Bell, and to illustrate his point he talked about how the song was written and originally performed by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, but then Cash performed it, and infused the song with the mileage that was on his life. The fact that Johnny Cash's life experiences added a tangible quality to the song, and in a sense, credibility. Even Reznor later said that the song "belonged" to Cash now.
Ever since that commentary on the song I've always felt his age, his life, his story just imprinted onto the lyrics and the sound of his voice. It's staggering really.
The trailer that was released for the new Wolverine movie
Logan featured that song, and it added so much nuance to the story of Wolverine. Knowing that it would be Hugh Jackman's last time portraying the character after 16-17 years, and that within the narrative itself, it's set in 2024 and the wear and tear of Logan's life is catching up to him. You see the substance of the song in flesh and blood in that trailer - it really got me.
(If anyone's interested in the trailer)
