    What is the Pride of Life?

    We get introduced to pride in Gen 3:1-7 during the temptation of Eve. It is connected to the lust of the flesh and lust of the eyes. However, it is deadlier and more subtle than the others in how it impacts and manipulates our person. It is illusive to the point that the religious people of the world are the most corrupted by it. It is so deeply embedded in us, that we think pride is a good thing to demonstrate and act in; and, humility and meekness are bad things to exhibit as signs of weakness. Pride is one hundred percent carnal in thinking and feeling. It is the part of us that assumes that since I have a life, it is at my disposal to use as I see fit. We claim ownership of our life and take possession of control over it. We determine that we have all the rights to make the decisions for it and that no one else should exert control over it. We become sovereign, self powerful, and the author of our life.

    How can we know pride is operating in and managing our life?

    Here are some of my suggestive hints (Matt 4:5,6). It never likes being wrong, corrected, or told what to do. It loves to boast about knowledge, always demonstrate that it is right, and being in control of its own affairs. It will be on guard against anything contrary to its right of way. It will defend against anything that makes it look bad or weak. It will reject anything that threatens its sovereign control over its life. Pride cannot submit its will or control to others. It defies any god that attempts to exercise any real sovereignty over it. It exalts itself against God. It wants a glory of its own. It mimics humility as false humility; plays dead in ignorant believers, and remains insincere in believers that have not overcome its seduction. This becomes the root of self righteousness in believers that justifies a bad attitude, condemnation towards others, malice actions, and anger that sins against others. This is how religious people are able to justify atrocities and shameful things they commit. However, God says pride and haughty spirit goes before our destruction and the fall (Proverbs 18:16).

    How can a believer defeat the temptation, the pride of life?

    Be honest and examine yourself (1 Cor 11:13). Expose your thought to critical analysis in constrast to Scripture (2 Cor 13:5). You can only do this by acting contrary to pride (James 4:7). You act contrary by challenging your beliefs, assumptions, and opinions. Study Scripture and ask God to give you the interpretation of what you read (2 Tim 2:15-17). Argue and debate with the Scripture concerning your convictions (Isa 1:18). Be zealous about obtaining the truth despite the pain truth causes (Heb 11:6). Get to know your place as beneath God and anybody He has given authority over you. Understand that the difference between spiritual and natural things (John 3:1-12). Allow God to set fire to your person, thoughts, and feelings to see if anything is of God (1 Cor 3:11-15). What gets consumed in the fire was pride or built in our pride. What is left is all good and usable for God.

    What is your input? I am trying to write a sermon regarding this matter. I have to teach Sunday in a pinch situation.

    Pride is to consider oneself superior to others in attributes of excellence. There are many kinds of pride.
    Most kinds are subtle, concealed and difficult to detect.In a nutshell pride is to voluntarily and consciously regard oneself
    superior to others in knowledge or mundane excellence in a way which engenders contempt in the heart for others. pride
    consists of two ingredients,The feeling of superiority-considering oneself to be great and Contempt for others.

    Where the condition of contempt for others is non-existent, pride-- will not be applicable. Mere belief in superiority
    and inferiority greatness and smallness- is not pride. For example: an old man regarding an infant to be small without
    the notion of contempt for it. But, the one who intentionally considers himself better than others, becomes arrogant.
    His nafs swells up with pride, the consequences of which then manifest themselves.

    Examples of pride are:
    to regard others with contempt;
    to take offence when others do not greet one first;
    to be offended if others do not offer you respect;
    to be annoyed when someone admonishes you;
    refusal to concede the truth even after having realized it.

    It was pride which made Satan a deviate. Pride is the exclusive prerogative of God. This malady of pride is remedied by
    reflecting on the Splendour, Glory and Majesty of God. This reflection will produce in one a realization of one's own
    lowly position. Your own excellence will then recede into nothingness. Also, humble yourself in the presence of those
    whom you regard as your inferior. Be respectful to them so that you become imbued with humility.

    You are correct in your ascertion about the many definitions of pride. on the money, if I say so myself.

    However, I was just talking about one particular type of pride that everyone finds it hard to overcome. One type of pride is having respect for your appearance, like having on decent clothing on yourself and not dirty clothing (there is nothing wrong with this). The pride that one has for child's accomplishments that excites a parent (nothing wrong with this either). I am talking about the type of pride that causes us to do as you said Satan was accused of. Exalting himself to as god. When we take control of things and assume authority that we should not.

    I just want to encourage you in your sermon Sunday. I will be praying for you. May the Holy Spirit speak through you and the congregation gain some insight into their lives. I think this is a tremendous subject to preach on and everyone can benefit from it.

    Micah 6:8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

    Yeah -all that Psalms nonsense will get you nowhere in life. Dare to take control and get something done for good or change something for good and it must be accompanied by self flagellation. The meek shall not inherit the earth - you have to get up and fight and make your voice heard. Otherwise you die a delluded slave. There is one consolation, however, and that is you will never know the error of your ways...

    But I guess there is a virtue in "humility" - the idea that you are better than the arrogant sod that treats you like dirt. Hold on, I thought humility meant...

    Humility does not mean weak or powerless. It means not arrogant before Holy God. It means keeping the law of love.

    “pride brings destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. It is better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly than to live it up among the rich and famous (Proverbs 16:18-19).

    This to me does not simply mean before God. Indeed, if that were the case, there would be little that distinguishes the morals of a Christian to that of an arrogant and pretentious person.

    Does God ask us to protrate ourselves in front of Him (to submit, in Islamic terms) but approve of assertiveness, self-confidence and self-assurance in front of others?

    Or - does God expect that we treat everyone else in a like manner to Him (with openness, humbleness and humility) even while we are trodden on because we will be rewarded in the Kingdom of Heaven whereas they (those that mistreat us) will be given their just deserts?

    Is this not the philosophy on inaction and, ultimately, injustice?

    Absolutely NOT! There are some situations that call for turning the other cheek. There are other situations in which we are NOT to be meek. We are to be bold when speaking the truth of the gospel.

    Humility is not about submission but about power. It is about allowing God to fight our battles for us rather than fighting them ourselves. At the same time, we are filled with the power and glory of God and are used as vessels of honor to bring men to salvation.

    It wasn't no weak Jesus who stood between those men who were about to stone Mary Magdaline nor a namby pamby coming back. It will be a warrior and so we are as well. We are meek and apologize quickly and forgive even more quickly whether we are asked to or not. Yet, we do not slink around like the weight of the world is on our shoulders.

    What I did not type about pride is that a person never recognizes it in himself until he is rendered powerless and his pride brings harm upon him or others he cares about. Pride is the safest of sin until the reaping is due, then it is the most destructive.

    Pride also says:
    1.How is that possible (John 3:4)
    2.That absolutely cannot be true (Joh 8:13)
    3.I reject that outright without investigation (John 18:19-23)

    God hit me with a brick today with a revelation. He told me that pride in people is an attempt to steal glory from God. Pride is mankind's attempt to look good, important, and\or self-suffucient as a person by one's own means of talent, knowledge, or character.
    He told me He hates the pride of life in mankind. It exhalts itself above its creator. He says it is never lawful to demonstrated pride. It is okay to happy or joyful about something, but boasting and bragging of oneself goes to far.
    I was like wow to recieve this revelation today. He also showed me how pride is attached to the sin of strife which matures to confusion. I did not know strife was a dead work of our sin nature. Man there is so much more. I think He is leading me to learn more about this subject................. Take some pride in yourself, just got a new meaning to me..... no thank you.

    This is so interesting and potentially liberating -- if you can please elaborate --
