How to discern the leading of God

Discussion in 'Christian Advice' started by MissJaneAnonymous, Feb 28, 2010.

  1. HOw do you know when God is leading you? How do you know when you are in the wrong or right church? Is it a feeling or the development of interpersonal relationships. How do you know when it is the right time to move? It has been on my heart to move from where I am. I am thinking about moving to Toronto and that is a big leap because I don't have family out there. HOw do we know when God is leading us?

    GOD did not make us robots but gave us the ability to make decisions. GOD is everywhere and all a person needs to do is turn to HIM and they shall find HIM.

    In order to make good decisions in your faith you need GOD'S WORD working in your life. Read and reread the NEW TESTIMENT until the next time you read it you will already know what IT'S going to say. For then IT'S locked in your heart to draw from the rest of your life. You will never be sorry you did. This is GOD'S ROADMAP given to us so that we are able to walk up that path to the KINGDOM of ALMIGHTY GOD

    As you walk through life You need to always keep in mind:

    Ecclesiastes
    Chapter 12

    1 Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come And the years approach of which you will say, I have no pleasure in them;

    2 Before the sun is darkened. and the light, and the moon, and the stars, while the clouds return after the rain;

    3 When the guardians of the house tremble, and the strong men are bent, And the grinders are idle because they are few, and they who look through the windows grow blind;

    4 When the doors to the street are shut, and the sound of the mill is low; When one waits for the chirp of a bird, but all the daughters of song are suppressed;

    5 And one fears heights, and perils in the street; When the almond tree blooms, and the locust grows sluggish and the caper berry is without effect, Because man goes to his lasting home, and mourners go about the streets;

    6 Before the silver cord is snapped and the golden bowl is broken, And the pitcher is shattered at the spring, and the broken pulley falls into the well,

    7 And the dust returns to the earth as it once was, and the life breath returns to God who gave it.

    8 Vanity of vanities, says Qoheleth, all things are vanity!

    9 Besides being wise, Qoheleth taught the people knowledge, and weighed, scrutinized and arranged many proverbs.

    10 Qoheleth sought to find pleasing sayings, and to write down true sayings with precision.

    11 The sayings of the wise are like goads; like fixed spikes are the topics given by one collector.

    12 As to more than these, my son, beware. Of the making of many books there is no end, and in much study there is weariness for the flesh.

    13 The last word, when all is heard: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is man's all;

    14 because God will bring to judgment every work, with all its hidden qualities, whether good or bad.

    Well, Miss, I guess your lack of responses shows that we are all waiting for an answer to that. Yes, definitely hiding God's word in our hearts helps a great deal. And here's something that really comforts me. In Jeremiah there is a place where he believes the Lord told him something, then then the thing comes to pass, and then Jeremiah says, "Then I knew the Lord had spoken to me." And he's Jeremiah the prophet!!!! So I'm thining that if it was at times uncertain for him, it's okay that it is often times uncertain for me.

    That being said, I was once counseled, and I think it's good counsel, to pray and ask, and then if there is no clear answer after a time of waiting for one, to do the thing that most seems to me that God would want, factoring scriptures, his heart and character, etc. Because in the end, what will bless God is not doing it perfectly, but rather the effort and the heart to please Him. If our heart is right, truely yeilded to the desire for His will, He will not let a small detail like our lack of discerment get in the way. He will take a heart like that and make sure it reaches His destination. Brian and Cheryl Broderson often say that the only way to miss God's will for your life is to intentionally disobey when you have a clear directive from Him. And even then, after an undesirable season of reaping what we sow, if we repent, He'll get us back on track. (But, anyone reading, let's not disobey just because He's gracious. I'm thinking we'd learn the true meaning in living color of the scripture that says that if sow to the wind we'll reap the whirlwind.)

    It is to our Father's glory that we bear much fruit. While there are some teachers who say to never make a move unless we are sure God is speaking, learning that all I had to do was make the best decision I could and then trust God to tweak it if needed, takes a lot of pressure of me. However, I think the teachers who encourage solid surety are speaking more about huge decisions like marriage partner choices.

    So yes, as we get to know Him more and more through His word, the discernment can come easier, but remember Jeremiah, and let me know if you need a scripture ref for that, and I'll look it up.

    Blessings on you Miss,
    miss

    Miss J -
    In order for us to know the heart of God and his leading we must first see if it lines up with His word. The Bible is a....... users manuel for our lives. It's His loved letter to us. Moving to toronto is a big step, especially if you have no one there. Are you invoved in a church seek the advice of the elders. Never make a big decition without asking the advice of church elders, or your Pastor. But above all pray ask the Lord if it's His will for you. There are many things to do before you make major decitions.

    For us, there are 3 consistence....1. is of course scripture....if it goes against scripture, it's not of God...but that leaves out a host of things that we must decide everyday, like moving to Toronto. 2. is it something that will not let go no matter how "insane" it might seem. I find that for us anyway, things that are of the flesh, are like emotions, they ebb and flow, come and go. Things that are of the Spirit are consistent, stable. 3. and the third consistent we find is that if God asks this thing of me, the resources and opportunity will in fact present itself. Many years ago, we felt the call of God on our lives to move across the country. We had 3 young children at the time and it would have seemed like insanity. So we prayed and waited. We didn't have a job, the money, etc. so we prayed and waited. By miracle, and I won't go into details at the moment, suffice to say not pleasant, we aquired the money to go. Left with a not so good car, 3 very young children, no job, barely enough money to get there and back, much less stay, and we left because God provided for our going after laying on our hearts the need. Point being, the final piece to the puzzle, at least from our perspective, is the resources to do the thing.

    A foundation in scripture coupled with trust in the Holy Spirit's guidance may provide some those "feelings" or pulling in one direction that you are looking for. However, there are some important clarifications: You may or may not get a definitive answer as soon as you ask for it. Also, if you get an answer and follow that path, it might not end up the way you expect. Sometimes a move or job change may end up bringing a lot of pain and suffering and you may second-guess God's part in it, but it could still be exactly what was best for your life's journey.

  8. Here's a simple answer for you--Follow your heart! If you feel led to Canada, pursue it and try to move there. One thing I've learned is if God doesn't want you there, he'll close the door/throw in a roadblock that prevents you from moving to Canada.

    So, give it a try!

    Best wishes!

    How do you know when God is leading you- When you are growing spiritually..

    Right or Wrong Church- You are growing spiritually.. Things are being revealed you Spiritually.

    Right time to move- Trust God and Wait on God. If really wants you to move He will open the door. That one is a little harder but, know you are always where you are for a reason there is something to learn.

    Pray to God and Learn to wait on the response.

    All The Glory Belongs To God Forever!

    I thought we were supposed to follow Jesus to the Father in Heaven? Remember the eye
    of the needle. Jesus said it was finished. If you believe that you are free from bondage
    then why are you concerned about being led. A free person is not led. If you want to
    go to Toronto, Go. or what is the use of being free. Free indeed. Most have not experienced the second exodus and are still on the Egyptian side. A lamb is lead to the pasture and then set free, Same with creation. A dog circles the pasture to protect.
    But the lambs are free to venture within the pasture. The Earth is our pasture.
    Our Earth after The Act of the Father in Heaven freed us.

    Regarding the churches of creation, If you are free, go to any church you like. As for me. I entered into
    The Temple. Go to Mark 15:38 and peer inside if you can, and enter into if you desire.
    As for creation and it's churches, beware of the circle or disk.

    We are free, and yet servants of the most high God. We are free and yet sheep who need a shepherd. We are people who are free and yet under the authority of the King of King's....point is, we are free from the curse of sin, we are still subjects of the King. We are called to serve one another and God.

    Dear MissJaneAnonymous. You had some good replies, and I can only join. You say that you know the Bible, and God sees our hearts, He knows our thoughts and wishes, and He loves us. Keep talking/praying to Him and listen to Him. Jesus told us " follow me," don`t try to run ahead, keep asking God to guide you, to lead you, and then watch and listen. God knows, God can, and God will, we may be sure of this. I say this with love and blessed assurance. Greetings from Emmy, sister in Christ.

    Hi MJA ,

    To know God's leading one must know God - the better we know God , the better we know His leading .

    We know God primarily through embracing The Testimony of Jesus and communing with His Holy Spirit .

    Usually , "where" one should be , is further down on the list of priorities , than is , "how" one should be .

    Consequently , the best way to sense clearly where one should be physically , is to apply well the clear sense of how we should be spiritually .

    This is akin to -

    Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
    (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek ) for your heavenly Father knows that ye have need of all these things.
    But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
    <-----> Matthew 6:31-33

    Sometimes a physical move can work together with our ongoing inner transformation , yet it would be an error to place the spiritual as being dependent on the physical - for it is quite the other way around .

    It's good to desire to be close to The Most High , so close that we are perfectly clear of Divine Direction .

    But before a loving parent directs their child where to drive , they first make sure that child is clear about how to drive safe + well .

    Having a working knowledge of God's Will , as is expressed in Scripture ( Esp. The New Testament ) search within for any areas which could fittingly use some vertical movement ( either raising up of something not valued enough , or putting down of that valued too much ) and then though drawing closer to God , and His declared will ; one is in a better place for His leading to be clearly discerned in other areas , such as the horizontal matter of where to go / be on the apparent plane of this sphere .

    I think the passage below is the one referred to earlier , in Jeremiah - ( to me it doesn't imply he doubted , as much as he knew to exercise prudent caution , and waited on The Lord's Verification , before coming to a firm conclusion ).

    And Jeremiah said, The word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
    Behold, Hanameel the son of Shallum thine uncle shall come unto thee, saying, Buy thee my field that is in Anathoth: for the right of redemption is thine to buy it.
    So Hanameel mine uncle's son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the LORD, and said unto me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin: for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine; buy it for thyself. Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD.
    <-----> Jeremiah 32:6-8

    Also see Isaiah Chapter 58

    *************************************************************************************

    God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwells not in temples made with hands;
    Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he gives to all life, and breath, and all things;
    And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;
    That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:
    For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
    <-----> Act 17:24-28

    May The Lord Be Pleased to Bless !

    This is why it is so important for you to be ANOINTED by GOD with HIS HOLY SPIRIT. ( SAVED-BORN AGAIN )

    John
    Chapter 16

    12 "I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.

    13 But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming.

    14 He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.

    15 Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.

    We listen to our heart and use the mind of Christ.

    We do not throw out thinking, but we reason rightly, using weighty evidence, without bias.

    Many folks know very little about the HOLY SPIRIT and make assumptions about the HOLY SPIRIT. Like:

    When you receive the HOLY SPIRIT?
    Who receives the HOLY SPIRIT?
    What does the HOLY SPIRIT DO?
    How do you know you have the HOLY SPIRIT within you?

    The HOLY SPIRIT cannot be given to you or taught to you by man. GOD the FATHER sends HIS HOLY SPIRIT by ANOINTING those he has chosen to receive HIS HOLY SPIRIT.

    MANY ARE CALLED BUT FEW ARE CHOSEN

    When this happens there will be no doubt that IT happened and that IT came from GOD. You are no longer tied to the teachers of the worldly Church. Your CHURCH becomes the KINGDOM of ALMIGHTY GOD and you have a direct line to GOD. This is when we receive the MISSION GOD has for each one of us and supplies all our needs, even what we have not the ability to have. Before THIS comes about GOD must know HE has your whole heart, mind, strength, and soul. HE weights your heart and knows if you EVER become ready.

    Many folks believe that the HOLY SPIRIT comes to all babes in CHRIST. This is NOT the case.

    So be aware and alert!

    Dear MissJaneAnonymous

    2 Questions:

    1. What do you want to do?
    2. Who put that desire there?

    The sheep pen is a large place.

    Pursue LOVE.

    -Eric

  18. Eric: I want to be a walking vessel of God. Also I want to relocate, which is a tough decision since I am very close to my immediate family. I feel as if the Lord wants me to leave where I am. I have had this desire for about four years.

    Wonderwayle, I understand your post, But the Lord gives freely and I believe the works of the Holy Spirit is manifested in individuals live through the fruit they bear. Such as it is written in Galatians 5. I do not believe that tounges or great manifestations are the only sign of receiving the Holy Spirit.

    Thank you ChildofGod97. I am beginning to believe that as well.

    I don't believe my posts talk about tongues or great manifestations. But I would question what you had in mind as to your meaning ( great manifestations ). If you mean GOD making it clear you have received HIS SPECIAL GIFT the HOLY SPIRIT I can asure you HE does. Otherwise how would you even know you had been ANOINTED?

    Pay close attention to:

    Galatians
    Chapter 5

    18 But if you are guided by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

    1 JohnChapter 2

    20 But you have the anointing that comes from the holy one, and you all have knowledge.

    21 I write to you not because you do not know the truth but because you do, and because every lie is alien to the truth.

    26 I write you these things about those who would deceive you.

    27 As for you, the anointing that you received from him remains in you, so that you do not need anyone to teach you. But his anointing teaches you about everything and is true and not false; just as it taught you, remain in him.

    John

    WARNING!

    Gal. 1:6-9

    "I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned".

    2 Tim. 4:3, 4)

    "For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths".

    Today, many people are twisting the Scriptures around to support their own opinions and views.

    GOD'S WORD is not what you want to make it. It stands on IT'S own to bring us WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING. GOD means exactly what HE put in HIS WORD.
