According to my Oxford Dictionary of the bible a shekel is a measurement, more preciesly, a unit of weight. It equals about 2/5ths an ounce of 14.5 grams of silver. It says in Yeshua's time this was a silver coin of the same weight.

Here is a cool site that gives much info about the return of the commanded half Shekel.

The word Shekel is a translation of the Hebrew word Shaqal which means "to weigh".

Here is some more info on money used by the Jewish people in Ancient Israel http://www.abu.nb.ca/ecm/topics/custom6.htm
