The Chaplain's comments are a classic example of Republican first, Catholic second. Hopefully this type of Catholicism is on it's way out.

Ave Maria University was founded by this faction, though, and obviously will hold on as long as they can, which may not be much longer if questions raised about their educational program and the quality of their degrees in the workplace are not answered.

I can tell you that Trump is really a dividing line. There's really no way even people who only believe two issues are important, issues that happen to nominally line up with the Republican Party's politics, can justify voting for Trump on religious grounds. This guy is as seedy as they come. Clergy who come out in support of him are telling you what's important to them, and it has nothing to do with religious faith.

If Trump takes power, I think we will look back on his enablers within the Church in a similar way as people look back on Catholic bishops and Cardinals who signed the letter welcoming Hitler into Austria.

And, just to state the obvious here: You're going to have a Church to go to on January 20th no matter who is elected, assuming Dr. Strangelove (Trump) doesn't launch a nuclear war over someone insulting his toupee or something, of course.

I wonder if this priest has ever heard of the Christian author Phillip Yancey. Yancey is not Catholic, but he had some rather interesting things to say about Trump.

Popular Christian Author Is Downright Baffled By Evangelical Support For Trump

Award-winning Christian author Philip Yancey is dumbfounded by the way that many members of his faith have rallied around Donald Trump.

Yancey expressed his doubts about the Republican presidential candidate and his Christian supporters during an interview with website Evangelical Focus.

“I am staggered that so many conservative or evangelical Christians would see a man who is a bully, who made his money by casinos, who has had several wives and several affairs, that they would somehow paint him as a hero, as someone that we could stand behind,” Yancey said.

“To choose a person who stands against everything that Christianity believes as the hero, the representative, one that we get behind enthusiastically is not something that I understand at all,” he added.

A lady I know, a minister's wife, was complaining on FB that Lester Holt had asked the debate audience to remain silent (as promised) after a Trump comment. "Why didn't he do that for Hillary?" she asked. "It's not fair." (Obviously the comment was a reminder for the entire debate, not just Trump.)

And I wrote her back and said, "If your husband even said one or two of the things Trump said at a rally or during the debate his congregation would run him out of town so fast you wouldn't be able to pack!"

They've cast aside all reason and common sense when it comes to Trump.
