Gene Wilder, who established himself as one of America’s foremost comic actors with his delightfully neurotic performances in three films directed by Mel Brooks; his eccentric star turn in the family classic “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”; and his winning chemistry with Richard Pryor in the box-office smash “Stir Crazy,” died on Sunday night at his home in Stamford, Conn. He was 83.

Eric Weissmann, who was Mr. Wilder’s lawyer for many years, confirmed the death. A nephew, Jordan Walker-Pearlman, said that the cause was complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

What can I really say without sounding cliché? Everyone already knows the comic genius and extraordinary actor he was.

Another legend gone. May he rest in peace. :(

Sad to hear.

I mostly remember him as Willy Wonka.
Same. Not that I have anything against Johnny Depp but he will never be Willy Wonka in my mind. Gene Wilder will always be the only one I see fit to wear the purple suit and top hat!

Beat me to it, my sister used to watch this movie all the time while living in Japan because it was one of the only english movies she had over there. She was the first person I called when I saw the news.

The chemistry he and Richard Prior had was great...

and his Willy Wonka was insane. Most people don't know this, but he was instrumental in turning Willy Wonka into a lighthearted kids film. The original script version was darker. He also improvised a lot in that movie...

great actor, though many of this generation probably don't know him... such is life I suppose but man, I loved growing up watching his films...

RIP

I didn't know he suffered from Alzheimer's. He was made for his Willy Wonka part, no other actor could play that role as good.
And shame on Johnny Depp for trying.

He's in a world of his imagination...

Apparently people didn't like it when I brought up that meme about him, on a lighter note.

Agreed. There're only two cases where I support capital punishment: Depp trying to remake Wonka and Russell Brand trying to remake "Arthur".

Not sure why you posted the lower picture, that is Marty Feldman -- whose acting I also loved and died in 1982.

For me, I think two of Gene Wilder's best were Silver Streak and Blazing Saddles -- he was great in Mel Brooks movies. In fact, I was having a conversation yesterday if Silver Streak could even be made today -- between some of the Black stereotypes and use of the "N" word.
