Gawker Media, an entertainment news media that was little better than a mass of tabloids, filed for bankruptcy after being ordered by a court to pay $140 million for invading the privacy of and destroying the reputation of professional wrestler Terry Bollea, better known as Hulk Hogan, through their unethical and potentially even illegal actions.
Gawker's long been mired in scandal after scandal, so karma was going to come back to them eventually. The trial - and the revelations that came out of it - only sped up the process.
Thing is, Gawker is trying to present itself as the victim here, a narrative its allies are all too keen to push. Why? The lawsuit was financed by another man whose life Gawker tried to ruin through their actions. Because this person was a corporate executive, Gawker is claiming that they're being suppressed and that this is a chilling precedent... even though it's pretty clearly a simple act of revenge.
