Both photos from 1800s or very early 1900s

US Marshall Bass Reeves (far left second pic). One of the first black US Marshalls. He policed Indian Territory (future Oklahoma) for nearly 40 years. He captured nearly 4,000 felons, and shot dead 14 of them in self-defense. It is likely the fictional character The Lone Ranger was based on Reeves.

Elvis Presley receiving his military haircut at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas after being drafted into the US Army in March 1958.

Elvis received his draft notice Friday December 20, 1957. 'It's a duty I've got to fill and I'm going to do it', he said. Initially ordered to report for duty January 20, he received a deferment for the filming of 'King Creole' (at that time titled 'Sing, You, Sinners') which was already in pre-production.

The deferment was granted and Elvis was inducted March 24, 1958.

The remains of the Antwerp Rex Cinema , Holland , after it was hit by a German V2 rocket on 16th December !944 . The death toll was 567 casualties to soldiers and civilians, 291 injured and 11 buildings were destroyed. 296 of the dead & 194 of the injured were U.S., British, & Canadian soldiers. This was the single highest death total from one rocket attack during the war in Europe.

My dad , a soldier in the British army , used to talk about it . He had been in to the same cinema the previous day .

A knocker-upper in the North of England .

Before the days when people could afford alarm clocks , a knocker-upper would go round the houses , tapping on bedroom windows with his pole , making sure they were up in time for work .

George Armstrong Custer
A few fun facts:
Graduated last in his class at West Point
Commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in 1862
On June 28, 1863, three days prior to the Battle of Gettysburg, General Pleasonton promoted Custer from captain to brigadier general of volunteers. At 23 years of age he became one of the youngest General Officers in the war.
At the end of the war he was reduced back to his last rank of captain.

Roosevelt also helped them accomplish the task at hand by operating a steam shovel at the Culebra Cut. In 1913, President Woodrow Wilson hit a button in Washington that was transmitted by telegraph to blow up a dike at Gamboa, causing the waters of Gatun Lake to flood the cut. When completed, each of the locks in the Panama Canal was 110 feet wide by 1000 feet long; the miter gates, which open and close to allow ships to pass through, are 65 feet wide and 7 feet deep, with their height varying from 47 feet to 82 feet depending on their location. The Grand Staircase of the RMS Titanic, 1912.

Wreck9.jpg

The wood is gone, but much of the supports for the staircase remain and is a good point of entry into the wreck.

This photo is from my hometown of Missoula, Montana. When I was home this Christmas I went birding along the base of the mountain on the right. The mountain on the left is called Mt. Jumbo. I used to climb it a lot.

There are a million fascinating facts and figures about the London Underground, but this rarely seen photograph reminds us just what an engineering feat the construction process was. Here we see the creation of the Central Line in 1898 .
