French supermarkets will be banned from throwing away or destroying unsold food and must instead donate it to charities or for animal feed, under a law set to crack down on food waste.

The French national assembly voted unanimously to pass the legislation asFrance battles an epidemic of wasted food that has highlighted the divide between giant food firms and people who are struggling to eat.

...

“It’s scandalous to see bleach being poured into supermarket dustbins along with edible foods,” said the Socialist deputy Guillaume Garot, a former food minister who proposed the bill.

This is a very good piece of legislation. When I worked at Walmart, we threw away tons of edible food. Couldn't give it to charity. Couldn't give it for animal feed. Could be fired if caught eating it ourselves.

The other question is ( besides ensuring about the eat before date because it is not like the charity will certainly give THAT food that day and you end up wasting it anyway. Also, and maybe more important than that is it right to basically force charity? Then there is the issue of not sold by when the end of the day that they receive it, two days and business week? six days what?

I've worked at supermarkets that did bulk donation of out of date food. We just went through our areas and found the food that was going to expire, boxed them up and put them in the walk-in freezer until the donation people came and got them. Pick ups were three times per week.

Is forced charity charity at ALL? Why would people donate out of date food to charity or otherwise?

Does it matter? People will sleep with food in their stomachs instead of good food being thrown in the bin.

I really don't see how this can possibly become a matter of semantics. It's an inherently and undeniably good.

Yes, if you are going to say they are donating to charity the point of it is that I do not HAVE to give. Frankly, even from a Christian standpoint as opposed to secular law God loves a CHEERFUL giver NOT one who does it by force.

That question is irrelevant to the people who need the food that is being destroyed.

Why would people donate out of date food to charity or otherwise?

Sell by =/= eat by. Like I said, I've worked for big supermarkets, both ones that threw away food and threatened us if we did anything else with it, and ones that donated all they can. It's not that difficult to keep the food from actually spoiling. Just put it in the freezer.

I doubt the people who are willing to dig in a dumpster for food are worried that it might be past the sell by date.

Do you own a supermarket in France that is a minimum of 400 square meters? If not, then you are not being forced to be charitable.

Yes, and if they get caught doing that their rear ends may be INCARCERATED in the county jail and either one of two things get an OR release and if you can not get to court in the morning you will be arrested AGAIN or either your behind will stay in jail since you likely could not make bail.

No, I do not I am saying that that is the point of charity in general not that I am being forced to do ANYTHING in this particular case/ I am excited to begin ( hopefully) volunteering shortly if I did not support charities ansd non-profits why would I want to give my time for FREE. I am not under sentence to do so.

Darn those Commie French people forcing big business to do the right thing...;)

It may be the right thing, but that dopes not mean that forcing people to do it is the right thing to do. It would be the right thing for my cousin J ( who is a paramedic by profession to help someone medically if he could even if he was off duty. In many states, however if he is off duty then he has no more responsability than anyone else would if they saw it.

You mean for dumpster diving? I agree that it's a barbaric practice to throw people in jail for the "crime" of being too poor to afford food. Fortunately, this legislation is a step in the right direction toward fixing that issue.

I'm not sure what you're getting at. Why do you seem to be getting defensive about this legislation? It forces huge companies with ample food suplies to give away what they were going to throw away. It will help people in a real way, not just theoretically.

I did NOT say it WAS wrong to incarcerate people for that there are AT LEAST two reasons it IS illegal and if I catch you doing it minutes later your rights may be being read to you if I had caught you before particularly.

Cops around here don't arrest poor people who go dumpster diving. At most, they use it as an excuse to run a warrant check. If that comes back negative, then they don't care. I've been told this by someone who regularly has to dumpster dive to get food and clothes.

However, LEGALLY in many places it IS illegal and there are AT LEAST two reasons.
