Thanks, it's a nightmare that I do not want to be part of, that's for sure.

I did mention to the lady that I may have to consider taking my family and leaving the country and living somewhere else to avoid this mess.

She said she understood and that I would need to do what's best for my family.

Thankfully, my wife receives Medicare and is on a Medicare Advantage Plan that takes care of the 20% that Medicare doesn't pay, and my daughter has full Medicaid.

It is when you are living off of disability for a family of three.

Not everyone can have the luxury of thinking that $400 is just chump change.

living off disability? That would be BEYOND hard with a family of three. I am on SSI and HATE it with every fiber of my being difference is I still live at home and put it this way I am 22 ( still a dependent on my father's taxes. My sister is 17 we do not qualify for the pell grant since our parents make about 55k combrined gross pay.

You have to GROSS under 50k that is your entire family income not just the main breadwinner as it were.

I was basing my reply of yours, "$400? trying to decide if that should be considered a lot of money."

You are correct, living off of disability pay for a family of three would be beyond hard, but we're doing it, by the grace of God we're doing it. Paying $400 a month for health insurance just isn't possible as that would put the saying at "beyond impossible." That's not to say that with God all things are possible. So maybe God has something better for us down the road.

If you show up in the ER, they are required by law to treat you regardless of your ability to pay or not.

If you have insurance, they'll get billed.

If you don't, the extra premiums others pay are placed into accounts for uninsured and when those dry up, they bill the government.

Health care isn't free. Doctors, nurses and staff, get paid, along with the other bills a hospital has.

It's your responsibility to have health insurance so others don't get stuck with your irresponsibility.

I KNOW that is the current law I am suggesting that either that law go away completely or they get stricter as to the conditions they have to treat in other words ONLY treat what is honest to goodness life-threatening at THAT particular time.

Not really sure how that works.

Here in MA under Romney Care, there was no tax credit. You pay a premium based on your income. It can be as low as zero or up to $1200 per month, depending on your income and the insurance plan you choose.

The Tax Credit is a new aspect that I haven't had to deal with, as of yet.

I had "one of those days" yesterday-- I hope I'm not about to have another one.

So, the doctors and nurses at an ER will decide whether to treat you or not ?

Never happen and it would be immoral not to treat any person who shows up at an ER needing help.

Ok...thanks for the reply. It's giving me a headache now, but I'm doing my homework. I think a lot of people will be freaking out next year at tax time when they get hit with some major tax payments (due to over-payment of tax credits with Obama-care). I don't think some realize this is not "free" money to put toward insurance. It's tax credits based on your income (that can vanish if your income rises high enough).

Since the Blue Cross building is closed, I'm gonna stay home and continue to work this out. Hopefully by tomorrow I'll be ready to enroll with-out too much trouble.

um honest question what is SO immoral about refusing to treat a cold or even a "mild" flu? I get that it is immoral not to treat life threatening things, but what is so immoral about refusing to treat someone who does not have the E part of what ER actually stands for?

Same thing that moral about giving people SSI checks. Maybe those people should get thrown in the street to survive any way they can.

For someone, either of those things can turn into pneumonia and then cause more issues in the long run. Better to treat early, and stave off serious complications.

BTW, I was an EMT (still am, but not employed) and have transported people for alot less than a cold or minor flu. It was not my place to judge anyone and maybe, they were in the situation that I am in right now.

Sometimes, even though they went in for one thing, something else was found that was much more life endangering.

I actually would vote that if it was ever up for vote. I understand regular disability, but if you do not put a dime in my thing is you cannot by common sense math have more people taking OUT of a system than putting in. Same thing (among other things that is wrong with regular SS people are living on it longer and yet having fewer children ( working-age adults) to put into the system what do they think is going to happen?

My ex-girlfriend's brother has a host of mental problems, one being agoraphobia, but also ADHD, and a few others. He never completed high school and was given a pass not to because of his mental health issues. He never worked a day in his life, but receives SSI.

I can understand him receiving SSI because he can never work. He just doesn't have the capacity for it.

    Should he not get SSI?

I would just think most adults could figure out that hm there are only so many resources if I am not really that sick why take up space, time and resources from those who are? But then again maybe I am a 22 year old with a pea sized brain and giant bolder sized head encasing it.

Because people with the flu can get pneumonia and die.

Did you ever hear of the 1918 flu pandemic ? It killed more people than WWI did.

I have no problem with the concept in a perfect world where EVERYONE was honest and understood you simply cannot get something for nothing which is why I have no problem helping people when I can. However, we live in no such world and so I support helping people, but NOT a federal or state level. Only on a local or personal level.
