Files on a computer question

So I thought I'd just give this a shot and see if any of y'all could help me out. I know some stuff about computers, but when my mom asked me this I got stumped. lol

Is there a way to have your documents saved with a password? So for example not just anyone could open one of them and be nosey?

I know that you can have your actual computer password protected. But was just wondering if you could go one step further with your documents.

On my computer you right click, hit properties, select the advanced button and the select encrypt contents to secure data. O the laptop I do the same only selecting make this folder private under the sharing tab.

It varies depending on operating system.
