Me and my husband have had big dreams all our lives, I want a career and he wants a family! But the doors to these dreams seem shut. Our pastor says "when God closes a door, do not break it down!"

I've been praying about both dreams and even trying to see if I can find a job and trying to figure out if I can change my meds for pregnancy, but I need to figure out how not to break doors! What dream is more important?

We are in a situation where after rent and bills we only have 100 dollars left (we do get food stamps). We don't have a vehicle which causes problems since my husband has multiple health issues and some specialists are an hours drive away. We also live in a place where there was a shooting in back of our house, our roommate was beaten, and I've seen prostitution and gang activity from my front door.

My husband is too sick to work. I have problems with bipolar disorder. Not sure how to get out of this situation. I have a bachelors degree and thought about trying to work. But I don't want to loose our medicaid.

Have you applied out of the state/city? It may be best to move elsewhere. It sounds like your in a dangerous environment and God might be preventing you from getting a better job because he wants you to move elsewhere.

It could also be that he is trying to humble you and your husband.

Maybe a better job is in store, but not yet?

The possibilities of why God has not provided for you in the way that you would like are endless. Best thing to do is pray and ask Him to reveal the reasons to you. Give it all to Him.

Is this knocking down a door? According to the job description, there are computer programs I need to know that I don't, two are already on my computer and I had to download an open source version of the third, is telling them I will learn them before the job starts too much?

The Bible also says ask and it shall be given you, seek and you shall find, knock and the door shall be opened unto you. So keep praying until God opens a door. I don't think feeding your family is a door God closes to children who are walking with him in the faith. That's probably not what your pastor meant.

I understand the idea of not knocking down (open) doors the Lord has closed. But sometimes you don't know if the door will open or remained closed if you don't knock in the first place. Having bipolar disorder myself, I know how tough it is to find a job that does not exacerbate one's symptoms. I pray that you can find the right job that will ease your funding issues, and better housing/location.

If all digns point to no, listen. God is likely shutting that door.
What doors are shut for you idk but...
My husband and I were in a similar situation and I was constantly waiting for our finances to improve before we had another child. Then we got pregnant with even worse financial issues but God used this. He used it to teach me to live within my means. To learn to be frugal and not loose with how I spent my money.
I have begun to fully tithe, save money, and pay our bills and we make no more money than the past.
Your financial wealth is more how you spend your money than how much you bring in. Someone making 5x as much as me could feel poor and broke all the time if they have poor spending habits.

Next month we will be down to40 spending money. We also always have to go to the food bank. We want a baby but can't find him/her with that!

Well I'm in your situation. I am disabled with many health issues and so on. Wife works. We want a family and all that. But I try to remember my dreams may not be what God has in store for us. Its why I tell people its ok to have dreams and goals, but realize we should be seeing what God wants for us because His goals are more important. Does it include kids? I sure hope so. And if it doesn't? I'd be sad but this life is temporary and I know at the end of the day the only thing I have left to have hope in is God.

My comment probably wasn't all the helpful but just hang in there and keep praying. Financially we cannot afford to live on our own. Unless we were in a "slummy" type trailer park maybe. Or some gang infested place in a inner city. Thankfully God has provided and the house we live in (with my parents) was bought for us so when they die we can get it and don't have to worry about where to move. And since the house will be paid off that saves ALOT of money. No rent, no money towards paying off the house. Its a big blessing.

I know the biggest thing for me is having a kid I read cost about $175,000 over their 18 year life span. Not counting college or private school. If we were on our own (in our own rental) even with my wife working full time we would just have enough to pay rent and MAYBE the utilities. No food. No internet. No anything really. But I try not to worry about those numbers because its all depends on many factors like where you live and so on. God has plans to help us, not hurt us. Though in some situation we are learning a lesson so it may seem painful. BUt at the end of the lesson you have the "Aha!" moment and realize what you were taught.

We told the women that own this house our problems and they don't want to see us have to move away and said they would help.

In the meantime I'm going to do something probably crazy. Tomorrow I'm going to request a med change, and I have a date set already to remove my IUD that I didn't want anyway. But I don't know if I should go down that road either!

Well, I'm basically trying to knock at all the doors...

My doctor does not recommend I go off my medication, she just won't change it.

Trying to figure out a place to move is daunting... and we told the people we rent from we are thinking about moving because of circumstances and they don't like hearing that, she said we have established too many roots in this town to just up and move.

I'm applying to jobs... and I don't know what they will say. One is funny because my husband said he wanted to live in a particular state and after that talk I find one to apply to in that state. I'm still worried about my bipolar affecting things.
