• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

    If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

    If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hey guys,

Just curious to see if you struggle with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) where the cold weather and darker hours are hard on you. I tend to struggle with that.

What things do you use to cope to help during that time? Any advice would be awesome.

Thanks guys!

Use 100 watt light bulbs inside (if the fixtures can handle them where you're at), or 2 or more lesser lights to brighten the room ,
no flourescent lights whenever possible,(they cause many problems known since the 1930's or so) ;

and take a spoonful of apple cider vinegar with a spoonful of honey every morning and evening (or thru the day as desired);
avoid tap water (stick with distilled, RO, or at least good filtered; in most cities);

and take one or 2 B-50's (the "happy vitamin") every day. (if you miss some days, or even weeks, no problem; likewise if you or a child takes too many, no toxicity - no side effects except yellow p) .

Sing the Psalms daily.
And pray through the rest of YHWH'S WORD DAILY.

Thank you so much for all that advice! I got nice bright lights and will try the rest! :)

What also really helps understanding the darkness is asking yourself how come things are like this, how come dark, cold, stormy and wintry weather makes you feel so crappy?

What could we compare with bad weather inside our hearts, and why would our Lord use such weather upon/within us and are there any benefits at all for us suffering all this in His loving truth?

I found a lot of answers doing that! The main one being, dark, stormy and wintry weather gets rid of lots of 'weak' growth or 'dead' growth out of our environment.

For where would we be without His icy blasts if we live in The Northern or Southern points of our inner world of being? For surely such weather is needed to balance the weather elsewhere on our planet?

So the more you analyses your responses to the weather the more you can see where your weak and dead growth within you is and let 'mother nature' get rid of such things where it ends up as life giving mulch instead and keeps us busy in our 'worm' self digesting chewing through all the debris and turning it into good and nourishing dirt to grow new/good food in.

I suppose we best understand that depression can be used for good by our Lord if we stay at His side and let Him walk us through the bad weather inside and show us why and how come and where it leads to, following the natural balance of things within our sinful hearts and taking advantage of understanding that.

For example storing lots of food in your barnyards to survive a freezing winter is a very smart thing to do when you know that it is on its way after Summer and Autumn have been. When we have plenty to eat then depression is not near as bad as when we are starving fro a bite because we didn't store any of our harvests for bad times but used it all up long before the storms and bad weather came around.

So I reckon people with SAD need to understand how to prepare for dark and cold weather before it strikes and already have good life stored away so the can survive the meager months winter will bring them. For obviously SAD sufferers live near, or at the North and South poles of their inner world, or don't you think so?

Peace.

Matthew 14:1-3
The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.

He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.
