I strongly suspect that the Messrs Merriam and Webster (of American dictionary fame) are, for their sins, currently paddling across a Lake Of Fire bare-ass nekkid in a copper canoe.

No Lake of Fire before the end! You meant PURGATORY (This is the CATHOLIC forum, apres tout...)

I've no qualm with English being Germanic and acting like Danish (nothing wrong with imitating our Scandinavian brothers & cousins). However, I concur with respect to not acting like 'Romans'; let English be 'English' (which would entail it letting it be 'Germanic' once more).

Well, except that the southern neighbors jumped the ditch back in '66 and gave the language a head transplant. So let's French it up as much as possible.

Good idea.

But I do not think your precedent was in Esperanto, sir.

Learning more about foreign languages, such as German, fascinates me.

Greek happens.
Latin is what happens when Celts learn Greek.
French is what happens when Gauls are forced to speak Latin.
English is what happens when Germans are forced to speak French.

Merci beaucoup!

(That's pronounced "Mercy buckets"...in Louisiana (which is pronounced "Loozy-anna"))

We have a real French person visit here from time to time. It's hard to tell, because she doesn't write with an accent.

"Real" French is an interesting concept. Does that mean a "French citizen"? Does it mean somebody who was born and raised in France? Does France, for that purpose, include the French West Indies or la Reunion? It should, because these are integral parts of France.

What about Tahiti and the Marquesas? These are French territories.

Of course, people grow up speaking French as a native tongue in places that used to be French colonies, are they French?

What about Americans of French origin? How far off the boat must one be to stop being Italian, or Greek. How about French?

It's an interesting discussion I have with my French native wife.
