Jesus was 3 days and 3 nights dead. That is from thursday to sunday.
Jesus was crucified on Nisan 20th, wich according to the above it was thusrday.
A thursday Nisan 20th did not happens in 33AD.

There is some room for debate as to exactly which year the crucifixion and resurrection took place in. Some scholars think as early as 30 A.D., others think 31 A.D.

Another factor that relates to this is that while the temple stood, the visible new moon as seen from Jerusalem determined the beginning of each month. The Karaite Jews are again using this method. While in diaspora the RAbbis decided on a calculated new moon but at the time of Jesus that was not how the months were began!

I came up with this precise figure, although I think it can be simplified. I am still researching the simplified method based on the lunar eclipse on 3rd April, 33 A.D. Because this figure points to Friday 16th Nisan, and in A.D. 30 there were no lunar eclipses till the end of May, but there was partial lunar eclipse with the magnitude 0.5764 happened when the moon rose at the night of April 3rd – that was exactly the first full moon after the spring equinox. The eclipse took place from 16:12:50 to 19:02:56 on the universal time, that is from about 6 pm to 9 pm according to the local time in the Middle East

JESUS FULFILLS THE SIGN

According to Mark 15:42 and Luke 23:54 Jesus died on a day of preparation, which was a day before the Passover meal known as the Feast of the Unleavened Breath. Now this also included a Sabbath rest which was not the typical seventh day of rest according to chapter twenty-three of Leviticus:

3 “Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, a holy convocation. You shall do no work. It is a Sabbath to the Lord in all your dwelling places.

This is further enforced due to the yearly Day of Atonement, which includes a Sabbath rest falling on different days of the week according to chapter twenty-three of Leviticus:

26 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 27 “Now on the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It shall be for you a time of holy convocation, and you shall afflict yourselves and present a food offering to the Lord. 26 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 27 “Now on the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It shall be for you a time of holy convocation, and you shall afflict yourselves and present a food offering to the Lord… 31 You shall not do any work. It is a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwelling places. 32 It shall be to you a Sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict yourselves. On the ninth day of the month beginning at evening, from evening to evening shall you keep your Sabbath.”

Now with regards to the beginning and ending of a Sabbath according to verse thirty-two, this is based in chapter one of Genesis, ‘And there was evening, and there was morning, one day’, whereby showing that a new day begins in the evening, at twilight. [1] Therefore the Jewish Sabbath (Shabbat) begins between sunset and dusk, and ends at nightfall the following day, which is when three stars are visible, approximately 40 minutes after sunset. So according to Leviticus the Sabbath begins in the evening on the 9thTishri to the evening of the 10th Tishri, although this would not have always fallen on the weekly Sabbath, hence 9th-10thTishri in the Jewish year 5772 was between Friday and Saturday on October 7, 2011 and 9th-10th Tishri in the Jewish year 5773 was between Tuesday and Wednesday on September 25, 2012. Therefore this shows that there were several Sabbath rests that were not always connected to the weekly Saturday Sabbath rest, such as the Feast of Trumpets and the Feast of Booths which also included a Sabbath rest. So all these feasts were considered Sabbath’s, which is enforced in chapter twenty-three of Leviticus:

37 “These are the appointed feasts of the Lord, which you shall proclaim as times of holy convocation, for presenting to the Lord food offerings, burnt offerings and grain offerings, sacrifices and drink offerings, each on its proper day, 38 besides the Lord’s Sabbaths and besides your gifts and besides all your vow offerings and besides all your freewill offerings, which you give to the Lord.

From this it is important to note the days are marked from an evening to the next morning, as shown from chapter twenty-three of Leviticus:

4 "These are the Lord’s appointed feasts, the sacred assemblies you are to proclaim at their appointed times: 5 The Lord’s Passover begins at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month. 6 On the fifteenth day of that month the Lord’s Feast of Unleavened Bread begins; for seven days you must eat bread made without yeast. 7 On the first day hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work. 8 For seven days present an offering made to the Lord by fire. And on the seventh day hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work.’”

Therefore the twilight of Thursday 14th Nisan is considered the start of the evening, and the Lord’s Passover, whereas Friday 15th Nisan is the next day, and the Lord’s Feast of Unleavened Bread, whereby marking one day and one night. From this it is important to note that a new day begins in the evening, at twilight, whereby the Jewish Sabbath (Shabbat) begins between sunset and dusk, and ends at nightfall the following day.

Now with regards to the sign given by Jesus in Matthew 12:38-40, this can be calculated as individual evenings and mornings. For example Jesus died on the day of preparation, which would have been on Wednesday 14th Nisan, and before the twilight of Thursday 15th Nisan.

Therefore Jesus was buried in the evening on Wednesday 14th Nisan, but before the twilight of Thursday of 15th Nisan which is the start of a new day. Therefore Jesus was in the tomb on Wednesday evening, which marks ONE NIGHT IN THE TOMB.

Now the twilight of Thursday 15th Nisan is the start of a new day and ends on Friday 16th Nisan. Therefore Jesus was in the tomb on Thursday morning and evening, which marks TWO NIGHTS AND ONE DAY IN THE TOMB.

Now the twilight of Friday 16th Nisan is the start of a new day and ends on Saturday 17thth Nisan. Therefore Jesus was in the tomb on Friday morning and evening, which marks THREE NIGHTS AND TWO DAYS IN THE TOMB

Now the twilight of Saturday 17th Nisan is the start of a new day and ends on Sunday 18th Nisan. Therefore Jesus was in the tomb on Saturday morning, which marks THREE NIGHTS AND THREE DAYS IN THE TOMB. From this it is important to note that Jesus could not have been in the tomb on the twilight of Sunday because this would be the start of a new day. Therefore Jesus would have been resurrected sometime Saturday between the morning and afternoon, but before Saturday evening and the twilight of Sunday 18th Nisan, whereby showing that Jesus fulfilled the sign he gave to the Scribes and Pharisees as confirmed in chapter two of John:

18 So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

I have leaned heavily toward a Wednesday crucifixion, burial near sunset. Thursday was an annual Sabbath the First Day of Unleavened Bread then exactly three days later would be Sabbath evening....this would mean that he was already risen by Sunday morning the first day of the week!

This fits best with the women preparing the burial spices on Friday....after the annual Sabbath was over....so that they were ready to prepare his body with those spices by Sunday morning!

This is what believe, also. But what difference does it make, really? The fact that He died and was resurrected and assended to the right hand of the Father and ever lives to make intersession for us, to be our Lord and Savior, our high Priest, is what I think far outweighs knowing the exact date of his death IMHO.

I agree, but it is interesting that there was a lunar eclipse on 3 April, A.D 33. Especially as this lasted for 2Hrs and 50 Mins. I will do some more research into this.

I have provided some additional information from my Blog site here >>>AychTeaTeaPea ://christian-apologist.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/evidence-for-crucifixion.html

SCIENTIFIC DATA SUPPORTING THE CRUCIFIXION

According to Mark 15:42 and Luke 23:54, Jesus died on the preparation day of Friday 15 Nissan, which was the day before the Sabbath. Now whilst Jesus experienced his brutal execution upon the cross (Matthew 27:45), a period of darkness covered the land from the sixth hour until the ninth. From this it is important to note that this is supported by scientific data from a catalogue of lunar eclipses. For example the data revealed that in A.D. 30 there were no lunar eclipses till the end of May, whereas in A.D.33 a partial lunar eclipse with the magnitude 0.5764 happened when the moon rose at the night of April 3. [1] Now this was the first full moon after the spring equinox, and was the day before the Jewish Passover which fell on Saturday 16 Nissan. From this it is important to note that the eclipse took place from 16:12:50 to 19:02:56 on the universal time, and would a have been from about 6 pm to 9 pm. Therefore this shows that Jesus died during the lunar eclipse, which according to Matthew 27:50-53 was after he cried out to God in a loud voice.

Now according to verse fifty-one, after Jesus gave up his spirit an earthquake shook the land, which is supported by Geologist Jefferson Williams of Supersonic Geophysical, and colleagues from the German Research Center for Geosciences. For example after studying soil samples from the beach of Ein Gedi Spa, which is next to the Dead Sea, two earthquakes were detected by researching the deeper layers of the soil. Now these findings were discovered by looking at the layers of built-up sediment, called varves, which build up each year, whereby it was determined that a widespread earthquake is known to have happened in 31BC, and another one was detected which must have occurred between 26AD and 36AD. Williams told Discovery that the latter earthquake occurred during 'the years when Pontius Pilate was procurator of Judea, and when the earthquake of the Gospel of Matthew is historically constrained.' He said the day and date of the crucifixion are known with a fair degree of precision - but the year has been in question. Therefore based on this information, Williams said the clues were:

•All four gospels and Tacitus in Annals (XV,44) agree that the crucifixion occurred when Pontius Pilate was procurator of Judea from 26-36 AD

•All four gospels say the crucifixion occurred on a Friday

•All four gospels agree that Jesus died a few hours before the beginning of the Jewish Sabbath (nightfall on a Friday)

Now with regards to the three synoptic Gospels mentioning darkness upon the land from the sixth hour to the ninth, this can be compared with Matthew 20:1-12. For example laborers were hired for work early in the morning, others were hired at the third hour (around 9 a.m.), the sixth hour (noon), and the ninth hour (3 p.m.). Therefore it can be determined that Jesus was on the cross at noon when the eclipse began, and remained on the cross till around 3pm when the eclipse ended. So this shows that all three accounts from the Synoptic Gospels agree. Now when comparing the time of the crucifixion in the fourth Gospel with the other three Synoptic Gospels, it appears that the account by John the Evangelist is different. For example according to John 19:14, it was ‘about the sixth hour’ when Pilate told the Jews, “Behold, your King!” whereas Mark 15:25 says it was ‘the third hour’ (9am) when Jesus was crucified. Now to resolve this issue, it is important to note that the account by John the Evangelist was nearing the end of the trial of Jesus, whereas the Gospel of Mark was when Jesus was crucified. Also it is probable that John was using time according to a Roman civil day, and would have therefore measured the start of a day from midnight instead of from dawn. For example a Roman civil day is used in John 1:39, which shows that the tenth hour mentioned in the text would have been 4pm. Therefore when referring back to the account in the Gospel of John, it can be determined that Jesus was sent to be crucified at the 6am (John19:14), and was on the cross before the lunar eclipse at noon (Mark 15:25).

Now this is also supported by Phlegon of Tralles, who was a first century Greek historian. For example a time-line can be established from his famous works called The Olympiades as follows:

"In the 4th year of the 202nd Olympiad, there was a great eclipse of the Sun, greater than had ever been known before, for at the sixth hour the day was changed into night, and the stars were seen in the heavens. An earthquake occurred in Bythinia and overthrew a great part of the city of Nicæa."

Also Africanus quoted from Phlegon as follows:

"During the time of Tiberius Cæsar an eclipse of the sun occurred during the Full Moon."

From this it is important to note that ancient Greece, the Olympic Games were held in the month of July of the first year of each Olympiad, and was a 4 year period between July and June of each succeeding year. Now the 202nd Olympiad has been calculated to run from July AD 29 to June AD 33. Therefore it can be

And another historian known as Philipon (with Origen) confirms the historicity of Phlegon's statement by writing,

"And about this darkness - Phlegon recalls it in the Olympiads... Phlegon mentioned the eclipse which took place during the crucifixion of the Lord Christ, and no other (eclipse), it is clear that he did not know from his sources about any (similar) eclipse in previous times ...and this is shown by the historical account of Tiberius Caesar."

Also this is supported by Luke 3:1 that states it was in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, and when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea.

From this it is important to note that when this is combined with the scientific data from a catalogue of lunar eclipses, the evidence shows that Jesus died around 3pm on Friday April 3, 33 A.D.

9. MIRACLE OF THE CRIMSON CORD

Talmud - Yoma 39b:

Our Rabbis taught: During the last forty years before the destruction of the Temple the lot [‘For the Lord’] did not come up in the right hand; nor did the crimson-coloured strap become white; nor did the westernmost light shine; and the doors of the Hekal would open by themselves, until R. Johanan b. Zakkai rebuked them, saying: Hekal, Hekal, why wilt thou be the alarmer thyself? [2] I know about thee that thou wilt be destroyed, for Zechariah ben Ido has already prophesied concerning thee: [3] Open thy doors, O Lebanon, that the fire may devour thy cedars. [4]

The Rabbis taught, "During the last forty years before the destruction of the Temple – which happened circa 70 A.D., the scarlet thread did not become white, nor did the Western lamp in the Temple shine; and the doors of the Holy of Holies would fling themselves open of their own accord. For the forty years before the destruction of the Temple, the scarlet thread never turned white, but remained red." The second Temple was destroyed in 70 A.D.; forty years before 70 A.D. would have been circa 30 A.D./ C.E. In other words, from the time of Jesus until the destruction of the Temple, according to Judaism, the people's sin was never forgiven. They are trying to justify themselves by works, but Isaiah 64:6 tells us that our righteous deeds are as filthy rags – the literal Hebrew term for 'filthy rags' in this passage is actually a comparison to a blood soiled menstrual cloth

Jesus gave a miraculous sign to the scribes and Pharisee that signified his resurrection from the dead, which is shown from chapter twelve of Matthew as follows:

38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.”39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

From this it is important to note that whilst Jesus experienced his brutal execution upon the cross (Matthew 27:45), a period of darkness covered the land from the sixth hour until the ninth, which three of the synoptic Gospels agree upon. Now this can be compared with Matthew 20:1-12. For example labourers were hired for work early in the morning, others were hired at the third hour (around 9 am), the sixth hour (noon), and the ninth hour (3 pm.). Therefore it can be determined that Jesus was on the cross at noon when the eclipse began, and remained on the cross till around 3pm when the eclipse ended.

From this it is important to note that before Jesus died, he cried out to God in a loud voice (Matthew 27:50-53), which according to Mark 15:42 and Luke 23:54 was on the preparation day of Friday 15th Nisan. Now this would have been before the twilight of the Sabbath that fell on Saturday 16th Nisan. For example the Jewish Sabbath starts between sunset and dusk (twilight), and ends at nightfall the following day, which is when three stars are visible, approximately 40 minutes after sunset. Now this is confirmed in chapter one of Genesis as follows:

‘And there was evening, and there was morning, one day’,

So this shows that the start of a day begins in the evening, at twilight. [1][2] For example the twilight period is between sunset and dusk, whereby the period after this is night, and lasts up until the period between dawn and sunrise, which is also known as the twilight. Therefore based on this would mean that when Jesus died on the preparation day, it would have been at 3pm on Friday the 15th Nisan, but before the twilight of Saturday 16th Nasan.

Now according to chapter fifteen of Mark, it was still the day of preparation when Joseph of Arimathea asked for the body of Jesus, which is shown from verses 42-43 as follows:

42 And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the Council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

From this it is important to note that in the same chapter, the death of Jesus is confirmed by a Roman Centurion, whereby upon the order of Pilate the body of Jesus is given to Joseph for burial, which is shown in the following verses as follows:

44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died. And summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. 45 And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph. 46 And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.

Therefore this shows that Jesus was placed in the tomb on Friday the 15th Nisan, which was also before the twilight of Saturday 16th Nisan.

JESUS FULFILS THE SIGN

Firstly it is important to understand what Jesus meant by three days and three nights. For example in chapter four of Esther of the Old Testament, it states there was a fast for three days and three nights, but goes on to say that the fast was completed on the third day. Therefore this shows that any part of a day would be considered as one day and one night, which is confirmed in the Jewish Talmud and the Babylonian Jerusalem Talmud, whereby it is said that any part, an "onan" - any part of the day is considered a full day. Now this is also the understanding of the Qur'an, whereby three days is considered to be three days and three nights. For example in chapter three of the Qur’an three days are mentioned as follows:

39 So the angels called him while he was standing in prayer in the chamber, "Indeed, Allah gives you good tidings of John, confirming a word from Allah and [who will be] honorable, abstaining [from women], and a prophet from among the righteous." 40 He said, "My Lord, how will I have a boy when I have reached old age and my wife is barren?" The angel said, "Such is Allah ; He does what He wills." 41 He said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." He Said, "Your sign is that you will not [be able to] speak to the people for three days (ayyāmin) except by gesture. And remember your Lord much and exalt [Him with praise] in the evening and the morning."

And in chapter nineteen of the Qur’an three nights in mentioned as follows:

19:7 [He was told], "O Zechariah, indeed We give you good tidings of a boy whose name will be John. We have not assigned to any before [this] name." 8 He said, "My Lord, how will I have a boy when my wife has been barren and I have reached extreme old age?" 9 [An angel] said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, for I created you before, while you were nothing.' " 10 [Zechariah] said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." He said, "Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three nights (layālin), [being] sound."

Now based on the above time factor of a minute or any part of the day being counted as a full day, when this is applied to the sign Jesus gave to the scribes and Pharisees, the following shows that Jesus fulfilled the sign:

Jesus was buried on Thursday/Friday 14th Nisan, but before the twilight of Saturday 15th Nisan

= 1 day and 1 night

Jesus was in the tomb on Friday/Saturday (Sabbath) 15th Nisan, but before the twilight of Sunday 16th Nisan

= 2 days and 2 nights

Jesus was in the tomb on Saturday/Sunday 16th Nisan,

but he was gone from the tomb before sunrise,

and before the twilight Monday 17th Nisan

= 3 days and 3 nights.

From this it is important to note that Jesus was gone from the tomb between dawn and sunrise of Sunday morning, which is confirmed in chapter twenty-eight of Matthew as follows:

1 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.

Therefore based on the time factor of a minute or any part of the day being counted as a full day, this marks the fulfilment of the sign of Jesus being three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. From this it is important to note that the disciples of Jesus also confirmed that it was the third day, which was when he appeared to them as a transfiguration as shown from chapter twenty-four of Luke as follows:

19 And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. 22 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.

(1) The Jewish Publication Society translated this phrase "at dusk" (1955 edition of The Holy Scriptures) and "at twilight" (1962 edtion). To judge from this translation, the first evening is when the sun goes over the horizon and the new day begins; the second evening when it has become dark and the stars are visible.

(2). Friday, as the forerunner of Shabbat, is called "'Ereb Shabbat" (The Eve of Sabbath). The term "'ereb" admits of two meanings: "evening" and "admixture" (Ex. xii. 38); and "'Ereb Shabbat" accordingly denotes the day on the evening of which Sabbath begins, or the day on which food is prepared for both the current and the following days, which latter is Sabbath.

The idea of preparation is expressed by the Greek name paraskeué, given by Josephus ("Ant." xvi. 6, § 2) to that day (compare Mark xv. 42; Luke xxiii. 54; Matt. xxvii. 62; John xix. 42). In Yer. Pesaḥim iv. 1 the day is called "Yoma da-'Arubta" (Day of Preparation) [Jewish Encyclopedia, s.v., "Calendar"].
