Many Christians know from reading Hebrews 8:1-6 that at Christ's ascension into Heaven He began His role as our High Priest in God's Sanctuary/Temple in heaven "made without hands". The great pattern after which the earthly sanctuary in the OT was a tiny miniature model.

Some Christians also know from Romans 2:13-16 that at some future point God will judge all mankind "through Christ Jesus", in a true "Gospel" judgment where the saints are "justified" in the future - (so not the same thing as the past justification mentioned in Romans 5:1-2 which happened at the moment one is converted/saved/born-again).

Romans 2
13 for it is not the hearers of the Law who are just before God, but the doers of the Law will be justified. 14 For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves, 15 in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them, 16 on the day when, according to my GOSPEL, God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus.

And most Christians know about the "Judgment seat of Christ" and the fact that every single one of us will have our cases brought up there.

2 Cor 5
10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

Some say this process started in 1844 - when the "time came for dead to be judged" Rev 11

18 And the nations were enraged, and Your wrath came, and the time came for the dead to be judged, and the time to reward Your bond-servants the prophets and the saints and those who fear Your name, the small and the great, and to destroy those who destroy the earth.”

So then at some point after Christ's ascending into heaven and taking His role as our High Priest - He began His work in the process called "The Judgment seat of Christ".

Is there anything about God's salvation model of the Sanctuary system that tells us at what point the High Priest enters into a role of God's judgment?

Possibly the "Day of Atonement" - Lev 16?

When was this predicted to happen?

in Christ,

Bob

Christ our High Priest at Judgment Seat of Christ: 1844

FWIW, there is already an extensive thread on that topic [73 pages] at this link for those interested.

Seventh-day Adventists say Jesus started the day of atonement in 1844.

As the sins of the people were anciently transferred, in figure, to the earthly sanctuary by the blood of the sin-offering, so our sins are, in fact, transferred to the heavenly sanctuary by the blood of Christ.
Ellen White, Spirit of Prophecy Volume 4, page 266

EDIT December 26,2010. Some of the material in this post is derived from an earlier version of my website on the sanctuary. Since folks were asking about the link I am posting a revised version of the link. Some of the material is now different on the site, however. You can review the current site at

www.adventistsanctuary.com

The Seventh-day Adventist Church teaches that Jesus began to fulfill the day of atonement cleansing in the sanctuary in 1844. Here is a statement regarding this from one of their fundamental beliefs:

In 1844, at the end of the prophetic period of 2300 days, He entered the second and last phase of His atoning ministry. It is a work of investigative judgment which is part of the ultimate disposition of all sin, typified by the cleansing of the ancient Hebrew sanctuary on the Day of Atonement. In that typical service the sanctuary was cleansed with the blood of animal sacrifices, but the heavenly things are purified with the perfect sacrifice of the blood of Jesus. Quoted from Adventist Fundamental Belief #24

But the Scriptures show that Jesus fulfilled the day of atonement blood cleansing of the sanctuary in the first century, not 1844.

Following is just some evidence that Christ went into the heavenly equivalent of the most holy place and that He fulfilled the cleansing portion of the day of atonement, that part that happened in the sanctuary.

Hebrews chapter 9 begins with a description of the earthly sanctuary service. As part of this description of the earthly sanctuary the author points out the limited access of the earthly high priest who could only go into God's presence once per year, on the day of atonement:

Heb 9:6 Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God.
Heb 9:7 But into the second went thehigh priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:

This shows the limited nature of the old covenant sanctuary. Even the high priest had very limited access to God's presence. He alone could enter once per year into God's direct presence, and not without blood. He did not stay but withdrew again until the next year.

Jesus' purification of sin at that time is made even more clear by another verse in Hebrews:

Heb 1:3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high

Jesus made purification for sins then sat down. He made provision for all the world by His death, entry and purification.

This is a straight-forward fulfilling of the type of the day of atonement cleansing that happened in the temple.............*snip*

See part 2 below
Part 2

The type of cleansing portion of the day of atonement involved:

- death
- entry
- purification

Jesus did just that.

-once for all death:

Heb 10:11 And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.
Heb 10:12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God,
Heb 10:13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet.

-once for all entry:

Heb 9:12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.

Heb 9:23 Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
Heb 9:24 For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.
Heb 9:25 Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own

-Purification of sin:

Heb 1:3b After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high

This is a fulfillment of what happened in the type. And the author, writing in the first century, describes it all as past tense, and therefore long before 1844.

Jesus by one sacrifice and one entry into God's presence made purification for sins. He did what the endless round of sacrifices by the earthly priest could never do. This shows that the type that Adventist apply to 1844 already happened in the first century.

We also see evidence of the fulfillment of the day of atonement entry and purification in the radical difference in access to God in the new covenant. The limited access to God in the old covenant is completely changed with Christ. In the earthly only the high priest could come into God's presence, and then only once per year.

But Jesus sets that on its head. Jesus went into God's presence and stayed. In fact He sat down. The sitting of Christ is significant.

Heb 1:3b After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

The sitting of Christ at the right hand of God in Hebrews indicates His status as ruling with God.

But more than that Hebrews uses it to show contrasts with the old testament system. The priest never sat down in the sanctuary, his work was not finished. He had to continually offer the same sacrifices, which never really removed sin. But Christ completed the one Sacrifice of Himself and the one entry and then sat down, having made purfication.

Notice how Hebrews contrasts the standing of the priest daily with Jesus' sitting down:

Heb 10:11 And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.
Heb 10:12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God,
Heb 10:13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet.

Moreover Jesus' sitting down indicates that He is not withdrawing from God's presence as the earthly high priest had to do. Jesus entered God's presence and stayed.

And there, having completed the death, entry and purification He waits for His enemies to be made His footstool. He has completed the elements of the blood provision.

And not only does Jesus sit at God's right hand but now He has made it possible for us to go there too, right into God's presence. We can come boldly to Him to find help in time of need:

Heb 4:16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Heb 10:19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus,
Heb 10:20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh,
Heb 10:21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God,
Heb 10:22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

All of us can come into God's presence right to the throne which could never happen in the old covenant.

Truly Christ is better!

Jesus now intercedes from the Father's right hand. We come to Him to receive in real time the benefits of His completed Sacrifice and purification.

Jesus' role as High Priest is not over. But His provision is made. Now we either accept or reject the benefits that He offers through His one time provision.

But where does this leave the Adventist sanctuary doctrine? The day of atonement type of entry and purification that they see starting in 1844 already occurred in the first century.

And Jesus appeared invisibly in 1914. Also Armageddon started in 1975. Oh, and Judgment Day is in 1994, or 2011.

James 1:27 Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

Therefore:

1 Ti 6:6 Now godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain[c] we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

11 But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life,

Titus 3:4 And let our people also learn to maintain good works, to meet urgent needs, that they may not be unfruitful.

15 All who are with me greet you. Greet those who love us in the faith.
Grace be with you all. Amen.

Yes that takes us to post #171 - I hope they had a good time.

In any case the texts I listed in the OP seem to be generally agreed upon so far.

So in my book - so far so good.

The OP does not prove that 1844 is the date for anything.

The OP merely notes that the 2Cor 5:10 event of the Judgment Seat of Christ - that is done at some point in the future by Christ after he went to heaven and took his seat at the right hand of the Father as our High Priest - may have happened in 1844 but does not make any case for it.

I am asking about the basics listed in the texts in the OP.

1. Christ seated at the right hand of the Father as our High Priest at His ascension -- Heb 8:1-6.
2. Christ to conduct the Gospel work of judgment some time future to Romans 2. Rom 2:13-16.
3. Christ's judgment to include "All of us" - for "we must all stand before the judgment seat" 2Cor 5:10
4. Lev 23 - Day of Atonement points to the work of the High Priest as part of a year-end-judgment "type".

in Christ,

Bob

The insinuation that it could have happened in 1844 is in itself absurd.

The OP points out that in Rev 11 "The time came when the dead were to be judged" - the judgment seat of Christ begins with Adam's generation - begins with the dead and eventually moves to the cases of the living.

The insinuation that it could have happened in 1844 is in itself absurd.

Are you saying that Christ as our High Priest could not have begun that judgment of the dead in 1844?

Notice that in Daniel 7 beginning with vs 9 and through the end of the chapter the thing that brings on the 2nd coming of Christ is the completion of that judgment seat of Christ when at last "Judgment is passed in favor of the saints" according to the chapter.

It represents the final stage of Christ's High Priestly Ministry that began according to Heb 8 at His ascension.

I have not presented any texts indicating that it began in 1844 - just going through the information we have so far in the texts.

Information that is not too controversial when you take each one by itself.

But as they being to add data to the full picture - it is at least helpful.

in Christ,

Bob

Dan 7 - and the Judgment seat of Christ that is future to Romans 2.

9 “I kept looking
Until thrones were set up,
And the Ancient of Days took His seat;
His vesture was like white snow
And the hair of His head like pure wool.
His throne was ablaze with flames,
Its wheels were a burning fire.
10 “A river of fire was flowing
And coming out from before Him;
Thousands upon thousands were attending Him,
And myriads upon myriads were standing before Him;
The court sat,
And the books were opened.

11 Then I kept looking because of the sound of the boastful words which the horn was speaking; I kept looking until the beast was slain, and its body was destroyed and given to the burning fire. 12 As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but an extension of life was granted to them for an appointed period of time.
The Son of Man Presented

13 “I kept looking in the night visions,
And behold, with the clouds of heaven
One like a Son of Man was coming
,
And He came up to the Ancient of Days
And was presented before Him.
14 “And to Him was given dominion,
Glory and a kingdom,
That all the peoples, nations and men of every language
Might serve Him.

His dominion is an everlasting dominion
Which will not pass away
;
And His kingdom is one
Which will not be destroyed.

The Vision Interpreted

15 “As for me, Daniel, my spirit was distressed within me, and the visions in my mind kept alarming me. 16 I approached one of those who were standing by and began asking him the exact meaning of all this. So he told me and made known to me the interpretation of these things:

17 ‘These great beasts, which are four in number, are four kings who will arise from the earth. 18 But the saints of the Highest One will receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, for all ages to come.’
19 “Then I desired to know the exact meaning of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others, exceedingly dreadful, with its teeth of iron and its claws of bronze, and which devoured, crushed and trampled down the remainder with its feet, 20 and the meaning of the ten horns that were on its head and the other horn which came up, and before which three of them fell, namely, that horn which had eyes and a mouth uttering great boasts and which was larger in appearance than its associates. 21 I kept looking, and that horn was waging war with the saints and overpowering them 22 until the Ancient of Days came and judgment was passed in favor of the saints of the Highest One, and the time arrived when the saints took possession of the kingdom.
.. 26 But the court will sit for judgment, and his dominion will be taken away, annihilated and destroyed forever. 27 Then the sovereignty, the dominion and the greatness of all the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Highest One; His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all the dominions will serve and obey Him.’

I would tend to agree. Not sure what the Jews of today think about that tho

Act 17:31
because He did set a day in which He is about to judge the world in righteousness, by a Man whom He did ordain,
having given assurance to all, having raised Him out of the dead.'

2Ti 4:1
I do fully testify then, before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, Who is about to judge living and dead at his manifestation and His reign --

1Pe 4:5
who shall give an account to Him who is ready to judge living and dead,

Rev 11:18
The nations were angry and Thy wrath has come.
The time has come for judging the dead and for rewarding your servants the prophets and your people who revere your name, both great and small—
and for destroying those who destroy the land.”

God went into the Holy of Holies, the heavenly sanctuary when he ascended up to sit on the right hand of power, meaning to be the judge of all peoples of all nations.

Scripture places this event almost 2000 years ago by these versus alone:

John 1:51
Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

Mark 14:62
And Jesus said, I am and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

Matthew 16:28
Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

Luke 9:27
But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.

John 6:40
And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Now Jesus uses the word here and after which is to the immediate future and not 1844 or some futurist 2000 years in the making second coming.

Can you say all is fulfilled in Christ and that the tenants of first century Christianity are:

1) Christ has risen
2) Christ has ascended into his Heavenly Kingdom
3) Christ as our forerunner initiated the long awaited resurrection of the dead
4) Christ took with him the Old Covenant bride, the first fruits (144,000)
5) Christ has been coming throughout the ages for every faithful New Covenant departed (every eye shall see him), as Saint Paul confirms in 1 Corinthians 15:23, "every faithful at his own turn".

1 Corinthians 15:23
But every man in his own order, Christ, the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.

Every man or every person in his own order is in the singular and that is upon death, according to the departed faithful and Christ's very comforting words that these departed faithful, will not taste spiritual death, but he will personally raise them up on their last day and hour.

In Heb 8 - Jesus is said to have gone to heaven and taken his seat at the right hand of the Father - as our High Priest.

Heb 8
8 Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, 2 a Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man.
3 For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore it is necessary that this One also have something to offer. 4 For if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law; 5 who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.” 6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.

And He was still doing that High Priestly ministry at the writing of Hebrews -

Heb 4
14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

He begins His ministry in the Holy Place in heaven - because the outerourt the place of sacrifice is the cross -- and then Christ enters through the veil (his flesh) into the Holy Place.

Heb 9
But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation; 12 and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
