It still might make an interesting discussion in the light of recent news of the Pontiffs support of a known terrorist.

Pope Francis has suffered a serious blow to his spiritual and moral authority following the Vatican's recognition of the "State of Palestine" in a new treaty announced on May 13.

The Vatican's latest slippery slide into political and legal chaos represents a clear breach of clause 11(2) of the 1993 Fundamental Agreement Between The Holy See And The State Of Israel which provides:

Here we go. The Republicans who insisted progressives obey and respect JP2 and Benedict in all things don't feel the same way about a progressive Pope. Fascinating, isn't it? I guess the Cafeteria is now open on the conservative side of the isle, eh?

There is justice in the world.

The large number of people that Cardinal Burke's abuse of his position for political purposes has caused significant and unwarranted mental and spiritual pain and angst are finally getting to see his downfall. A Cardinal should never be telling people they will go to hell for voting for a major political party under normal circumstances. I don't call many things a sin, but Cardinal Burke was committing a sin when he did that. I'm glad Pope Francis has removed him from positions of authority.

Threats from prelates that you'll get tortured eternally for voting for a candidate whom you feel is the most ethical choice are a really unconscionable thing. One of the worst aspects of organized religion.

This, from a guy who eulogises Catholic Terrorists in Ireland who killed more Catholics than the British Army over the same period of time and tries to justify current terror degenerates in Ireland by spinning the lie that Irish Catholics are oppressed in Northern Ireland.

You couldn't make it up. :D

Pope Francis has more compassion in his little finger than you and I will ever have if we live to be 100. His ability to gain empathy from people like Castro, becoming a firm ally to Palestinian Christians (remember them?) and his support for bringing Iran in from the cold are just some examples of his abilities.

We are truly blessed to live in his time. I am proud and awed by his spirit and leadership.

I will not let detractors attack him without being challenged.

I don't have his diplomatic skills, but defend him I will, to the grave...

Any how many Catholics supported or actively took part in terrorism in Ireland? How many Catholics put money in the little collection buckets going around pubs in Boston during the Troubles to support 'the good fight'?

People support who or what they think is right, regardless of faith. He obviously sees the tragedy that's happening between Israel and Palestine and wants to help. It's better than standing on the sidelines whilst professing a pro-life stance.

Um. They were pretty selective about JPII and Bxvi as well. It's just the challenges those two represented were less publicised.

Maybe among right wing americans. Is that a bad thing?

The important thing is not who is pleased here on Earth, but whether God is pleased in Heaven.

Not sure why your attempting to conflate the Palestinians with the Irish struggle. Northern Ireland was forcibly taken by the Brits, Israel is a sovereign nation under attack from all sides.
