in this life when we were permitted to come to this our second
estate. And very likely we put ourselves under certain obligations
that we would discharge certain duties devolving upon us when we
came here into our second estate. And we had rendered ourselves

blessings that could only be obtained by observing the laws pertaining

brought about through the atonement of his Only Begotten Son
Jesus Christ. The thought of passing through mortality and partaking
of all the vicissitudes of earth life in which they would gain

as well as the pleasures of life in this mundane existence,
and then, if faithful, passing on through the resurrection to eternal
life in the kingdom of God, to be like him, filled them with

and knowledge obtained in this mortal life they could not get in
any other way, and the receiving of a physical body was essential

that blessing can come only on merit—through the faithful performance
of duty—only those who are worthy shall receive it. (Joseph

“One of the most fallacious doctrines originated by Satan and propounded
by man is that man is saved alone by the grace of God;

Joseph Smith said: ‘Any person who is exalted to the highest
mansion has to abide a celestial law, and the whole law too.’
(Teachings, p. 331.) Thus, a man may be damned for a single sin”

sought is godhood itself. Godhood is to have the character, possess

come from the mouth of God, being humble, and faithful in all of
their activities here in life. We are heirs, therefore, of celestial glory.
The gateway into celestial glory is faith, repentance, baptism,
and confirmation; and then, of course, as the Saints enter the
kingdom of God by compliance with the foregoing requirements,
they make their calling and election sure by rendering obedience
to all the ordinances and doctrines of the gospel of Jesus Christ
from day to day throughout the entire course of this mortal life.
These are they who shall dwell in the presence of God” (Milton R.
Hunter, Conference Reports, April 1949, pp. 70-71).
“Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are
heirs not only to the celestial glory but also to exaltation or eternal
life in that glory; and that heirship shall be obtained if they
keep all the commandments given by Jesus Christ to members of

“To summarize, immortality means to live forever and the immortality
given to every man and woman by the Savior is resurrection.
Each of us will resurrect our body which will be united with the
spirit, never to be separated again nor to disintegrate. Eternal
life, on the other hand, is the condition of life that those who live
righteous lives will enjoy throughout the ages in the Kingdom of
God. In fact, it means exaltation. He who receives the greatest portion

“No mere record alone will assure me my exaltation in the celestial
kingdom. That exaltation must be earned by a righteous life
on earth, by virtue, love, obedience, and conformance to every

all good, that ye shall live by every word which proceedeth forth

“The true value of the sacrifice of Christ means much more than
this general salvation which comes to all mankind. There is an
additional salvation that God has planned for his children. This
additional salvation is an individual salvation and is conditioned

of the prophets in the Book of Mormon explained why he and
his associates were so concerned about teaching more about Jesus
Christ, as he wrote: ‘For we labor diligently to write, to persuade
our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to
be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are

Him. If enduring to the end is essential to eternal life, why do we
struggle to be faithful? We struggle when we are caught between

“We must do more than just say we believe in Jesus Christ; we must

(Moroni 10:32). We come unto Christ by having faith in him, repenting

receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, and strive to keep God’s commandments
to the end of our days. Eternal life, known also as
salvation or exaltation, comes to those who believe and seek to
remain true to the gospel covenant. Christ is ‘the author of eternal

President Joseph Smith read the 3rd chapter of Revelation, and took for his text 1st chapter, 6th verse—"And hath made us kings and priests unto God and His Father: to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

It is altogether correct in the translation. Now, you know that of late some malicious and corrupt men have sprung up and apostatized from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and they declare that the Prophet believes in a plurality of Gods, and, lo and behold! we have discovered a very great secret, they cry—"The Prophet says there are many Gods, and this proves that he has fallen."

God An Exalted Man

I will go back to the beginning before the world was, to show what kind of a being God is. What sort of a being was God in the beginning? Open your ears and hear, all ye ends of the earth, for I am going to prove it to you by the Bible, and to tell you the designs of God in relation to the human race, and why He interferes with the affairs of man.

God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens! That is the great secret. It is altogether correct in the translation. Now, you know that of late some malicious and corrupt men have sprung up and apostatized from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and they declare that the Prophet believes in a plurality of Gods, and, lo and behold! we have discovered a very great secret, they cry—"The Prophet says there are many Gods, and this proves that he has fallen."

God An Exalted Man

I will go back to the beginning before the world was, to show what kind of a being God is. What sort of a being was God in the beginning? Open your ears and hear, all ye ends of the earth, for I am going to prove it to you by the Bible, and to tell you the designs of God in relation to the human race, and why He interferes with the affairs of man.

You are quoting from what is called The King Follett discourse. Br. Follett had died and Joseph was asked to speak at his funeral. He felt now who we are and what will happen in the next life would give a great deal of comfort.

I don't know for sure but I bet this was a lot like the Lord's sermon when he said we would have to eat his flesh. The reaction was that many of his disciples turned away from him, it was more than they could understand. All of this doctrine had been taught before but this seems to be the first time he put it into one context. I'm sure it was a bit much for some.

Joseph when on to explain;
"Intelligence exists upon a self-existent principle; it is a spirit from age to age, and there is no creation about it. Moreover, all the spirits that God ever sent
sent into the world are susceptible to enlargement.

The first principles of man are self-existent with God. God found himself in the midst of spirits and glory, and because he was greater, he saw proper to institute laws whereby the rest could have the privilege of advancing like himself--that they might have one glory upon another and all the knowledge, power, and glory necessary to save the world of spirits."

Br. Young enlarged upon this sort of said there was one great God and Father who started the ball rolling. Wish I had the quote for you but I'd have to clean through the 3000 hours of his discourses.

He became the mortal man known as Jesus.
He died, meaning his spirit left his body and entered paradise.
He was resurrected, his spirit returned to his body and lifted it up.

Four major changes occurred to his physical nature but not his Godliness. His righteousness and love for us never changes.

This ‘changelessness’ as it is applied to the Trinity really comes out of the idea of Aristotle’s “… "unmoved mover" (who) moves other things, but is not itself moved by any prior action.” wik The thought seems to mean, to move would imply imperfection.

The God of the Bible moves, He walks in the Garden, he comes and goes from his temple, Jesus ascends to his Father, the Father sends the Holy Ghost and so forth. Physically God moves.

God’s laws have also gone through some changes, there was the Law of Moses and Jesus changed that to the Law of the Gospel.

21 ¶ Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment …

There are two deaths, the physical and the spiritual. Spiritual death is to be cut off from the presences of God the Father. “ Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.” John 6 (so God is not un-seeable)

Through the atonement which Christ offered for us we are healed from spiritual death, so that we too can see the Father and be in his presence, we can become sons of God.

*The following is pure speculation drawn from scriptures and various remarks by our prophets.

In our Book of Abraham we learn there are different levels of spirits, one being greater than another until we reach ‘one like unto God’. These spirits seem to have an innate righteousness, they knew the difference between good and evil and always choose the good. Their will is and has always been the same will as the Father’s. These Sons of God are chosen to play the role of Messiah on different earths, it is felt that our Father in Heaven also went though this same process, dying physically and being resurrected to a perfect immortal state, see John 5.

They are spiritually above us, however we lesser children of God can learn. We can be made in his image and likeness, we can be taught to choose the good. We can learn to bend our wills to the Father’s. That’s the whole point of this earth.

I have to say that a perceived change in God is a change in man that is not perceived.

God may relate to man in different ways but the changing is man's. A parent treats an infant different than a teen. The parent's personality isn't changing, the child's maturity is. So the behavior of the parent is subjective to the child but the personality is not.

I agree with certainty that Jesus is our example. Not directly, but by way of God in the flesh. I disagree with almost all else since it is premised on the notion that a greater and immutable being is made mutable by assuming a lesser mutable being. The concepts that define human and Divine nature in Mormon theology blend passive with impassive, immutable with mutable, God with man, rendering the definitions of Divine and human natures essentially indistinguishable.

The Incarnation reveals mystery that the heart longs to know. What would God be like if He were one of us? How is it possible? A glimmer is understood by what God has previously revealed about Himself, and revealed about us in the revelation of God Incarnate Jesus Christ.

The human soul of Jesus is immutable at conception in that it is assumed to God at conception. This is the state of a human soul pure and perfect in heaven beatified, with God face to face or, also taught as having entered the Beatific Vision in heaven. Jesus' humanity then, is conceived in a state ordained by God to His intended end for all human persons, which is assumed to God.

This is the intended end for all human life. If Adam and Eve had not sinned their earthly life would have ended in a 'taking up' body and soul to eternal life with God. Eternal meaning, immutable immortal life without duration.

Jesus is a person of two natures. Divine nature and human nature. The divine nature is immutable(changeless) and so being greater, is not made mutable by a lesser nature. The greater immutable nature makes the lesser mutable nature immutable. God can assume human nature and become man but man can't assume divine nature and become God.

That the mutable state of human nature has the potential to be immutable is known by faith in the Resurrection of the dead. The human person becomes immutable at the resurrection. Jesus is immutable at conception and in being immutable He conquered death.

Every thing about Christ, His miraculous birth,, His infancy and childhood, His learning and behavior among men, His sinlessness and suffering, His mission, His Passion and death, His descent into hell and His Resurrection are all contingent on a human nature assumed to the eternal and immutable Word of God.

To sum all this up. Divine nature is not corrupted by human nature when God Incarnates. The humanity of Christ is immutable when assumed by God the Son at His conception.

So the thinking that Jesus' state of becoming flows from a mutable human nature is false.

To believe Jesus is an example to follow then you'd better "be perfect" all the time or be found guilty of breaking every law resulting in being cursed to outer darkness.

God revealed no such thing.
Galatians 3:11
But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

Romans 3:8
Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

Conclusion: To advocate other than the above (Galatians 3:11 \ Romans 3:8) God revealed some very harsh words: Galatians 1:6-9

God is Spirit and does not have a physical body. We are made in his spiritual image. As I already posted somewhere here, it was an Gnostic false religion that first taught that God the Father has a physical body.

Through the atonement which Christ offered for us we are healed from spiritual death, so that we too can see the Father and be in his presence, we can become sons of God.

*The following is pure speculation drawn from scriptures and various remarks by our prophets.

In our Book of Abraham we learn there are different levels of spirits, one being greater than another until we reach ‘one like unto God’. These spirits seem to have an innate righteousness, they knew the difference between good and evil and always choose the good. Their will is and has always been the same will as the Father’s. These Sons of God are chosen to play the role of Messiah on different earths, it is felt that our Father in Heaven also went though this same process, dying physically and being resurrected to a perfect immortal state, see John 5.

They are spiritually above us, however we lesser children of God can learn. We can be made in his image and likeness, we can be taught to choose the good. We can learn to bend our wills to the Father’s. That’s the whole point of this earth.

Biblical Christianity teaches that Jesus is our substitute, not our example.
To believe Jesus is an example to follow then you'd better "be perfect" all the time or be found guilty of breaking every law resulting in being cursed to outer darkness.


God revealed no such thing.
Galatians 3:11
But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

Romans 3:8
Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

Conclusion: To advocate other than the above (Galatians 3:11 \ Romans 3:8) God revealed some very harsh words: Galatians 1:6-9
  1. perverting the Gospel
  2. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

Not according to what Mormonism teaches as "atonement"

1) "Through the Atonement, Jesus Christ redeems all people from the effects of the Fall. All people who have ever lived on the earth and who ever will live on the earth will be resurrected and brought back into the presence of God to be judged" (True to the Faith, p. 18).

2) Boyd K. Packer's parable of the creditor and debtor.
* One place this parable is recorded is in the chapter on atonement in Gospel Principles.
Biblical Christianity teaches that through his voluntary sacrifice, Jesus made payment (atoned) for all sin. Therefore, salvation is free and full in Jesus. No more payments can be made. See Hebrews 10:18.


God help you to see your way through all this "speculation" as being what it is ...

Wow did you spin my words around or what.
Other religions have false systems and methods and 'formulas' and doctrines and practices to defend if someone is going to stay in one ,
and that often requires a lot of spin.
