Latest reports I've read indicate DAESH (sometimes called ISIS) has 'celebrated' the mass murder on social networks. This was FOX News, not the rigidly controlled "mainstream media". No report yet that DAESH claims responsibility - that I've heard.

I think righteous anger is proper, along with prayer for the victims of the mass murder and prayer for the souls of the cowardly murderers.

DEVELOPING: A large truck loaded with guns and hand grenades drove into a crowd of people who had gathered for a Bastille Day fireworks show Thursday in the southern French city of Nice, killing at least 70 people and injuring 100 more in a terror attack, officials said.

Regional president Christian Estrosi confirmed the death toll in a post on Twitter, calling Thursday "the worst tragedy in the history of Nice." Estrosi also asked residents to stay indoors immediately following the attack.

Major ISIS Attacks in Europe | Graphiq
French Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said the truck driver had been "neutralized" and an investigation would confirm whether he had acted alone.

A police spokeswoman, Sylvie Toffin, confirmed the incident was deliberate, telling the Associated Press, "It's an attack." A local government official told Fox News that the truck was driving full speed when it hit the crowd.

A witness, Wassim Bouhlel, told the Associated Press that he saw the truck drive into the crowd, then witnessed the driver emerge with a gun and start shooting.

"There was carnage on the road," Bouhlel said. "Bodies everywhere."

Estrosi confirmed to BFM TV that the driver fired on the crowd before being killed by police.

Nice's public prosecutor told reporters early Friday that bodies of the victims were scattered for over a mile along the Promenade des Anglais, a major thoroughfare along the Mediterranean Sea.

Sebastien Humbert, a regional police prefect, told BFM TV the truck traveled "over a long distance, which explains this extremely heavy toll."

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but but France has recently seen a spate of dramatic assaults from by jihadist groups, including the Islamic State group (ISIS) which straddles Iraq and Syria.

A U.S. official told Fox News that U.S. Homeland Security Jeh Johnson had been briefed on the attack. The official added that the attack was in line with ISIS, which has become "increasingly brazen" in its attacks as it comes under increasing military pressure in Iraq and Syria.

The attack happened at around 10:30 p.m. local time. A witness, identified only as Chloe, told FranceTV Info, "We heard gunfire, a lot. A crowd came to us and told us to run ... We went into a tapas bar and hid in the bathroom for half an hour.

"We went out and again we heard people running and saying 'truck, truck,' so we hid in the bathroom for an hour. The manager took us out by the back door and then I went home."

The Nice-Matin newspaper quoted one of its reporters as saying the truck driver "mounted onto the Prom and he drove on everyone." The reporter added, "people are running, it's panic."

The paper later posted an image of the truck on Twitter, captioning it, "The truck that drove into the crowd."

July 14 is a national holiday in France that commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison in Paris and the start of the French Revolution.

Fox News' Catherine Herridge and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Death toll now at 84! When will we take our heads out of the sand? Let Muslims into your country, and this is what you get. Will the US learn from German, Sweden, and France? Not likely, but I certainly hope so.

Try not to be too gleeful about a new chance to smear an entire religion because of a tiny subset.

80 people DID die...

You mean the "tiny subset" that has been responsible for countless attacks and thousands of deaths? You can continue to make excuses for them and bury your head in the sand but the fact remains that Islamic terror IS a real problem and people will continue to die until we start being honest about what's going on.

Getting real sick of this nonsense.

No one has said Islamic terrorism ISN'T a real problem. No one is making excuses for "them," either. But conflating all of Islam with radical, violent Islam does more harm than good.

But ok, I'll bite. You say "people will continue to die until we start being honest about what's going on." What do you think could have been done differently that would have stopped the Nice terrorist attack?

Dealing with the sorts of integration issues that seem to have divided French society especially would be a part of that response. It would be a shame and maybe slightly impractical if large crowds always had to be in traffic free areas protected by bollards etc but that also may have to be a part of the response. Also I think that what is coming is a far more serious vetting of people from Muslim backgrounds. Since it is people from these backgrounds who are currently forming the largest % not only of terrorism but also of crime in France. Without this you will have more incidents of this type and the Marine le Pen type solutions ( mass deportations - or even in the future exterminations - may be become a reality)

You aren't living in reality then because obummer makes excuses for islamic terrorism all the time and he and John Kerry lie to the American public and play it off as if they have ISIS handled and that they are not a threat, even though dead bodies are stacking in the United States and abroad. obummer is completely clueless and has no solution(s); but I believe that may have been his intent all along. The guy hates America after all.

French Islam does seem to be more radicalised than in other comparable European countries and they do have a problem with integration.

Really? Sweden tries to keep it a secret, but it is the rape capital of Europe, and Google about the issues German is facing.

I live in Germany and we have had nothing compared to the 3 major terrorism incidents seen in France this last 18 months. France sends more jihadists out to Islams wars than any of the other big 3 European countries. There is a deep divide between the Muslims that live in France and the normal French people. This divide and the failure at attempts to integrate lie in the background of this, only the latest of a number of incidents. That said we all stand with the French against the evil that attacks them.

Interesting. There may be more conflict because the French people are fed up, vs the Swedish people who can't seem to get enough abuse.

My hope is that the naiveté will cease, so that the world can join together in ending this terror.

There is only one real solution to the "Islamic problem" and it is neither liberalism, isolationism or genocide. Missionaries, Righteous soldiers and those who welcome refugees from the wars and failures of the Muslim world all witness to that better way. Welcoming Muslims running from Muslims is an act of Christian compassion and a witness to Christ. Christians share a faith and hope in a God that through Jesus Christ has demonstrated that it is possible to transform people into something better. Are there criminals, murderers and useless people in the mix? Yes of course and it was from such people that the church of God and indeed America was originally formed by Gods grace and mercy
