Zion, IL always makes me think of famous Flat Earther Wilbur Glenn Voliva.

The city of Zion was effectively controlled by the church; ... Religions other than the Christian Catholic Apostolic Church were effectively banned - visiting preachers from rival sects were harassed and hounded out of town by the city police force.

From 1914, he gained nationwide notoriety by his vigorous advocacy of flat earth doctrine. He offered a widely publicized $5000 challenge for anyone to disprove flat earth theory.[4] The church schools in Zion taught the flat earth doctrine.

"The idea of a sun millions of miles in diameter and 91,000,000 miles away is silly. The sun is only 32 miles across and not more than 3,000 miles from the earth. It stands to reason it must be so. God made the sun to light the earth, and therefore must have placed it close to the task it was designed to do. What would you think of a man who built a house in Zion and put the lamp to light it in
Kenosha, Wisconsin?"

He became increasingly focused on destroying the 'trinity of evils': modern
astronomy, evolution and higher criticism, insisting on a strict interpretation of 24-hour days for creation ... Voliva also frequently predicted the end of the world: his predictions that the end would come in 1923, 1927, 1930, 1934,[6] and 1935 were incorrect.

Granted that stupidity in and of itself is no reason to be gunned down, it seems this guy brought it on himself.
One has to wonder for what purpose he was taking pictures of schools ... and how many had he already taken pictures of?

ok, unless i missed something...

why was he shot?

Because he ran?

Because a taser"didn't work"?

Is there something i'm missing here?
He was "armed" and "struggling" with officers. We don't have enough info to know if the reasons are good ... but those are the reasons given.

Exactly, my friend. There isn't much information, and the information given, does not justify a shooting of this man.

He died.

Details matter.

Actually, I think we have all the details we need. There's an armed guy running away from police. He resisted arrest (i.e., "struggled") when they caught him. They either take him down or risk him taking others down.

I absolutely agree that information is sparce. At this point that could be the fault of the PD or it could be the news media.

It seems a tad bit early to call it unjustified though.

The info available now indicates the man was mentally ill.
Man killed by Zion cops was 'likable guy,' had history of mental illness, says dad | Chicago Tribune

The 38-year-old man killed in Wednesday's police-involved shooting in Zion was a likable and polite guy, his 84-year-old father said Thursday, but also suffered from mental illness and sometimes exercised poor judgment as a result.
Seems to be another really sad incident though.

Who did he attempt to kill?

Of COURSE he most likely was.

Is that a crime?

And "struggling" with the police, or "running"...

is THAT a crime?

My friend, scarce information regarding the death of ANYONE is cause for concern. Especially with the information given.

There is NOTHING indicating that this man was a threat and/or attempted to hurt or kill anyone.

Apparently.

The local jails provide more mental health treatment than psychiatric hospitals. Supposedly, it is cheaper for the taxpayers. Now the taxpayers get to pay for the mental health care for the cops that were traumatized in this incident.

:sigh:

It's heartbreaking. What a tragedy.

Praying for his family.

Resisting arrest is a crime but the punishment for that isn't supposed to be execution.

Yes. Officers like to go back home to their loved ones alive. Their training compels them to use deadly force in some situations.

Officers Killed in 2015 | Officer Down Memorial Page

Line of Duty Deaths: 129
Gunfire: 39

Running for this man was most likely due to fear, and the consequent struggling? Well by that time of being tackled by the police, and the taser gun being used on him.....

how would someone react if they're terrified?

Especially someone mentally ill?

Any details on if he threatened anyone, attempted to hurt or kill anyone?

Why is he dead?

How many shots?

What state was he in after being tasered?

How soon were medics called?

how many officers were involved?

how many used their guns.

What position was this man in when he was shot?

Where was he shot?

My friend, ALL of these details should've been forthcoming from the gitgo.

This man is dead.

It's a tragedy.

It worsens the tragedy with scarce information.

Yes, that is what describes what happened here. Execution.

Unfortunately there is not enough information to say otherwise.

Tragic.
