I've been a .net developer for 6 years now, I use it all day every day on my job. I think it has great potential. It has a variety that allows a C++, Java, or VB developer have an easy transition. (I did Java myself so C# was the most comfortable transition)
I think the biggest improvement that's come along is the LINQ/Entity Framework integration. It's much better than the DAL/Entity solution that came before it.
Second to that would WCF service applications.
Connecting to a SQL database and doing basic CRUD operations with data only takes about 5 minutes to set up.
