If you download Blender you get a 3D software system that rivals commercial systems. I didn't get much out of Sketchup and can't afford Maya but with Blender I'm getting into 3D printing and working on building a library for animations.

Anybody else into 3D?

I have not done any 3D for gaming or the like but I used to professionally use 3D with CAM software (personal designer and personal machinist) to produce 3D molds and forming dies for the automotive industry.

We did not have 3D printers which is an additive process but rather 3D milling machines which is a subtractive process - milling the item out of an oversized blank.

There are a few open source versions of 3D (NURBS) surface and 3D solids programs that I have heard are quite good. They mostly run on Linux but at least one (freecad) has been ported over to windows.
