This is not a debate thread concerning solo/sola scriptura as in this other thread.
What I would like to do is simply study this verse as it appears in the greek so please do not derail to any other topic other than this 1 verse [at least for now :D]Thanks
Since the topic of the Bereans was being discussed so much on another thread, I thought I would bring a post that I had up on that thread to this one so we could further discuss it w/o derailing the other thread
Perhaps we can examing each major greek word used in this verse and how they are used elsewhere.
That is if any here are interested :)

The greek word #4288 is interesting and only used 1 time in Acts and the rest in 2 Corinthians 8 and 9.
According to the lexicon it uses the root word #2372, which is used as "fury/wrath" in most places of the NT [expecially in Revelation].

ISA) Acts 17:11 These yet were more well-generated of the ones in Thessalonica, who-any receive the word with all passion/pro-qumiaV <4288> the according to day, examining the Writings if it may be having these thusly.

Textus Rec.) Acts 17:11 outoi de hsan eugenesteroi twn en qessalonikh oitineV edexanto ton logon meta pashV proqumiaV to kaq hmeran anakrinonteV taV grafaV ei ecoi tauta outwV

Strong's Number G4288 matches the Greek προθυμία (prothymia), which occurs 6 times in 5 verses in the Greek concordance of the KJV
Page 1 / 1 (Act 17:11 - 2Cr 9:2)

4288. prothumia proth-oo-mee'-ah from 4289; predisposition, i.e. alacrity:--forwardness of mind, readiness (of mind), ready (willing) mind.
4253. pro pro a primary preposition; "fore", i.e. in front of, prior (figuratively, superior) to:--above, ago, before, or ever.
2372. thumos thoo-mos' from 2380; passion (as if breathing hard):--fierceness, indignation, wrath. Compare 5590.

Great thread.

Examining ἀνακρίνοντες from ἀνακρίνω (Strongs 350)

By looking through a series of objects or particulers to distinguish or search after. Hence;
a. To investigate, examine, inquire into, scrutinise, sift, question. Spec. in a forensic sense of a judge, to hold an investigation; to interrogate, examine.
b. To judge of, estimate, determine.

Sounds a like it wasn't merely looking at the scriptures but most thorough of jobs.

Acts 17:11-12

Acts 17:11-12
11 And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul's message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to check up on Paul and Silas, to see if they were really teaching the truth. 12 As a result, many Jews believed, as did some of the prominent Greek women and many men.

I'd like to start out by looking at the word "received" in this verse:

"they received the word" The word received in this verse is from the gk word dechomai and it's to receive teaching, instruction, to receive favourably, to embrace, make one's own, to learn

dechomai is a middle voice usage of a primary verb and represents the subject as acting either upon him/herself or in his/her own interest i.e. to receive subjectively unto oneself.

They - the Bereans - each one of them separately and individually - were eager, willing, and ready to receive unto themselves the word. I just think it makes it more meaningful to see that the Bereans were a group but yet they were a group of individuals and that each one took upon themselves to search. Each one investigated; each one inquired into; each one scrutinized the scriptures to make the word each one's own!

"whether those things were so" = "Therefore many believed"

#2104 used 3 times in 3 verses. Luke 19:12, 1 Corin 1:26 and here. It is formed by the prefix #2095 and root word #1074 literally meaning "well-bred/born", which most versions render as "noble".

The word appears in Luke 19:12 about the story of a certain nobleman going out to look for a kingdom.

ISA) Acts 17:11 These yet were more well-bred/noble/eu-genesteroi <2104> of the ones in Thessalonica, who-any receive the word with all passion/eagerness the according to day, examining the Writings if it may be having these thusly.

NKJV) Luke 19:12 Therefore He said: "A certain nobleman/eu-genhV <2104> went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return.

I decided to put up the wiki definition and it indeed appears to closely resemble the english meaning of that greek word. Thoughts?

Nobility - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nobility is a social class which possesses more acknowledged privileges or eminence than members of most other classes in a society, membership therein typically being hereditary.

The privileges associated with nobility may constitute substantial advantages over or relative to non-nobles, or may be largely honorary (e.g. precedence), and vary from country to country and era to era. Traditionally membership in the nobility has been regulated or acknowledged by the government.

#2332 occurs 5 times in 5 verses.
It appears to a combination of 2 greek words...."Thessalos", which seems similar to the greek word #2281 used for "sea", and #3529 meaning victorius.

Perhaps someone more knowledgable in greek can give a better view of what the meaning of "Thessalo" is.

ISA) Acts 17:11 These yet were more well-bred/noble of the ones in Thessalonica/qessalo-nikh <2332>, who-any receive the word with all passion the according to day, examining the Writings if it may be having these thusly.

2332. Thessalonike from Thessalos (a Thessalian) and 3529; Thessalonice, a place in Asia Minor:--Thessalonica.
2281. thalassa probably prolonged from 251; the sea (genitive case or specially):--sea.
3529. nike apparently a primary word; conquest (abstractly), i.e. (figuratively) the means of success:--victory.

Young) Matthew 4:15 `Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, way of the sea/qalasshV <2281>, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations! --

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thessalonia

All variations of the city's name derive from the original (and current) appellation in Greek: Θεσσαλονίκη, literally translating to "Thessalian Victory" and in origin the name of a princess, Thessalonike of Macedon, who was named so because she was born on the day of the Macedonian victory at the Battle of Crocus Field.

I'm understanding, 'go with his arguments without any preconceived refutations at the time of receiving' and then only critique afterwards by validating with scripture.

Basically a non hostile reception which allowed them to fully understand what he was saying before trying to criticize.
