Anybody play harp?

Hey, any harpists here? I play and don't know anybody else who does. It'd be cool if I could find some other people to talk to.

I assume that you mean a harp with strings, and not a harmonica aka as a 'harp', right?

I do!!!! I've been playing a concert size pedal harp for almost 2 years, now. Most of my training was in piano, and who knew that the music is almost identical, and the harp is extremely similar. It was a smooth transition.

I could go on and on about playing the harp, but I won't. The condensed version is that out of everything I play (guitar, piano, bass guitar, violin, drums) HARP is my absolute favorite, and if I had to give everything else up to play harp, I would.

I often think of how David's harp soothed Saul's soul, and it kind of does that for me too.

Have you ever played anything from the "Medieval to Modern" books? If so, tell me what you thought. What are your favorite types of music to play? I've tried playing traditional Irish harp music, but it wasn't my favorite. Any suggestions on pieces? Sorry if I'm asking too many questions but I don't know any harpists except my teacher, so it's fun talking to someone who plays harp.

im not a harpist myself, but we had a harpist playing at our school today. She was really good, she explained how it worked and about the different coloured strings. She played three peices of music on the Concert Harp and one on the electronic harp. It was amazing!!

I haved loved all of the pieces I've played. So far, I haven't played anything from Medieval to Modern. I especially love Spanish harp music. It is very emotionally moving. There is a book called "The International Rhythmic Collection (For all Harps or Piano) Vol. 1" by Dr. Alfredo Rolando Ortiz. The pieces range from easy to moderate to difficult, and they are all exceptional pieces. My favorites are "Zamba para un dia de lluvia (Zamba for a Rainy Day)", and "Esperando (Waiting)"

Also, I've been working on pieces from a book called "Sparklers" by Nancy Gustavson. They are all solo pieces that focus on glissandos. They sound great, and people love to hear them.

I get all of my music from Vanderbilt Music Company in Bloomington, IN. They are online at http://www.vanderbiltmusic.com/. Indiana University (also in Bloomington) has the largest harp school in the world, so they always have a knowledgable harpist to assist you. They ship music all over the place!

How long have you played? What size harp do you play? I started late at age 24, but it is my goal to study harp. Right now, I take private lessons through Indiana Universtiy, but am not admitted to their harp program. My teacher is fabulous, though!

What are some of your favorite pieces? Do you prefer a particular style?

I've been playing for 5 years, since I was 8. Right now I'm working on a piece for a competition... it's really hard, but I'm having fun! It's called Sonatina, by Samuel O. Pratt.

5 years! You must be doing well! You should check into IU's harp program. Have you ever heard of Susann McDonald? She was the first American to ever win an international harp event. She is the main professor for harp majors. Also, there is a huge international competition that IU hosts every year.
