I understand the blasphemy of the Holy Ghost to be a flagrant and wilful denial of the person or work of the Holy Spirit of God after receiving knowledge of him and his work, or attributing anything evil to his person or work here on earth as a witness to Christ as the Son of God. In it's context in scripture it would be more specifically attributing the work of Satan or demons to a work of the person of the Holy Ghost, which was the power of Christ's ministry from the time the Spirit descended upon him at the Jordan.
I've have seen people actually directly attribute the work of Satan to the Holy Ghost on several occasions, while I've been witnessing Christ to them; and I'm quite sure that there was no way back to God for them after doing it. It is interesting to see how unbelievers react when a Christian witnesses to the person and power of the Holy Spirit by directly using his (the Spirit's) name and speaking of his works. Many are quick to shy away from the topic, as if they seem to know innately that to speak against him is to to cut themselves off from God and Christ for all time.

I can't say that I've heard someone speak against the Spirit while I was talking to them about Jesus, but I ceratinly don't disagree that a few unbelievers have responded in that fashion. I don't think, however, that the Pharisees believed that Jesus cast out demons by the Holy Spirt and spoke otherwise. It seems to me that Jesus did not fit their image of the Christ, and the leaders had to explain His miracles somehow. Weren't the teachers of the law so devout that if they heard anyone speak blasphemy against God or His Spirit, they would stone his or her to death? The Pharisees had great zeal for the law.

Maybe the sin is simply speaking agaist the Spirit, knowingly or unknowingly. Jesus makes a definite distinction between Himself and the Holy Spirit, but what about God the Father? Is speaking agaist Him forgiveable? Is speaking against the Spirit also speaking against God?
