Abuse and depression

Hi all,

Do any of you guys know where I can find stats on the correlation between depression and abuse? I want to know out of curiousity's sake. My guess is that most abuse victims do suffer from a mood disorder of some kind.

Thanks, guys. I feel so down today. Maybe it's the beginning of another depressive episode (my last one was about 75 days long). I wish that Daddy Dearest would just stop hurting me...

sorry Rosa, I dont know where to find stats but I do know about conquering depression. Is it your pop that is physically hurting you?

Abuse...please speak to a youth leader or pastor, someone who can help. You don't deserve to be treated this way. God is with you, hold your head and faith up over the physical and emotional pain.

Thanks for your support. In case anyone here didn't know, I'm actually a twenty-something year old woman. Therefore, I have to help myself. I'm currently in the midst of deciding b/w studying away, or say to heck with that and living on my own in my own city. I hope that once I do leave home, I will have someone to help me if the depression/bipolar disorder (the doctors can't tell which) gets any worse. I really wish I could make a decision here, but when you have a mood disorder, you're kind of inept in this department. All I know is I have to leave, my mental health is getting worse, and the lousy job market isn't helping.

You can help yourself, but you don't have to do it alone. You may be 20 something years old but you always will be a child of God. Take every step with God. Please seek help for mood disorders you can make a decision. Just believe in yourself and have faith. If that job is stressing you out, do leave.

Please do not think for a moment that I have not tried to seek help. I have. I have put up with incompetent therapists/counsellors who did nothing but bring me down further. One of them even made anti-Catholic comments to me. I know I need help. I'm sure I've got a chemical imbalance of some kind. Trouble is, I've had different diagnoses (and hence don't know what kind of condition needs to be treated). Being a university graduate who is only partially employed does absolutely nothing to raise my self-esteem. The job market is awful (read Mel Hurtig's "Pay the Rent or Feed the Kids". He's proven what I'm saying right now). I did the best I could to get a full-time, "real" job, so to speak. I gave up in October, because I didn't even get an interview, except on two occasions (over a six month period. Talk about being a failure). Now, I have to figure out whether getting a Master's is even worth it or not (it could lead to nothing, I know. Graduate education is no longer a guarantee of a job). I feel that if I don't go for further study, then this makes me an unambitious bum (I got a GPA of almost 4.0 after I graduated, so there's pressure for academic success).

I'm really sorry to go on like this. I think I'd really just like to leave home and work extra hours at my current job to get the income, but, then again...

Do you see what I mean by indecisiveness?

Do you mind me asking what your situation is at home Rosa? Like, are you supporting kids on your own or are you single or married? You don't have to say, but I don't want to offer any advice or anything without knowing.

Rosa, you are not alone with the incompetent therapy. Problem with a lot of therapists is that they feel as if they are supposed to know how to solve your problem even if they don't have the slightest clue which usually results in some awful advice. And if they are attacking faith then their advice should just go down the drain cause if God is the beginning if knowledge then without God, their advice is useless.

One of the keys to overcoming your depression is to get out of the situation of abuse. I used to be verbally and physically abused growing up to the point of absolute depression. But, the Lord was able to totally heal everything in me. Well, he is still working on some things but for the most part, I have found his peace. Yeah, you might have a chemical imbalance but if I am not mistaken, most of us do. It may not be a disorder that you have but rather pain that needs to be healed. Keep seeking the Lord through prayer and studying his word. Let him speak to you guide you because the power of his Spirit is pretty amazing and the peace of mind that he can give you is priceless. See, as a Christian, joy in your life is important. The bible even says that the Joy of the Lord is our strength. Don't try to worry too much about academic success. For now, just focus on your relationship with the Lord and what his will is for you. He will use all of your knowledge to his Glory in time as you surrender to His Spirit. And he will also open doors for you and show you where to go.

And if you can, if you think you would be stable, maybe you should try to move out on your own. It might slow down your schooling and be a little of a struggle but at least you will be free from the abuse. Pray about it. And I'll pray for you to.
