Jesus had a full beard prior to crucifixion and afterwards he is depicted with no beard.
From the icons of the Early Church this may be observed and also from early Renaissance paintings.
Jan van Eyck's "Adoration of the Mystic Lamb" makes this clear (I am not sure if it is available on the net).
A beard was symbolic of sin and since Jesus carried the sins of his world to the cross he must surely have had a full beard. |
