Before I can answer your question I need for you to tell me which apparitions you are talking about. Lourdes? Fatima? Guadalupe? Mary showing up on a glass window in Florida?

Actually, i was thinking of apparitions per se.

Do catholics have standards when it comes to apparitions of Mary?

Yes, the Catholic Church investigates all apparations and tells the Catholic faithful which ones are worthy of belief and which ones are not. However, all apparitions are considered private revelation and are not binding on Catholics and are not used in formation of doctrine.

Oh I see

Yes, the Catholic Church investigates all apparations and tells the Catholic faithful which ones are worthy of belief and which ones are not
So which of the Marian apparitions is worthy for belief?

Thanks for answering my questions!

Approved apparitions of Mary include (but are not limited to) Guadalupe, Mexico, where she appeared to an Aztec man in 1531; Paris, France, where she appeared to a nun in 1830; LaSalette, France, to two shepherd children in 1846; Lourdes, France, to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858; and Fatima, Portugual, to three shepherd children in 1917.

Those are the big ones; there are others, such as Knock, Ireland, and Banneux, Belgium, but it's 4 AM, I'm only up because this cold I have won't let me sleep, and I'm too lazy to look them up right now.

There are other apparitions of Mary which the Church has not condemned, but also will not approve; the most famous of these is probably Medjugorje, Bosnia-Hercegovina. And there are some that the Church has condemned and declared to be frauds, not worthy of belief; these include Bayside, New York, and Conyers, Georgia.

For me personally, Marian apparitions don't play a big part in my devotional or spiritual life; I believe in Guadalupe, Lourdes, and Fatima, and most of the rest I have no opinion on, one way or the other. If I'm asking Mary to pray for me, I dont need to use a specific apparitional title. :-)

Keep in mind that Marian devotions are very low on the list of practices in the Catholic Church---they are nowhere near the high level of, say, Eucharistic adoration; and although you will run into some Catholics (not to be mean, but usually female, lower-middle class, and not terribly well-educated) who have such an overblown devotions to Mary (and usually a specific apparition, such as Medjugorje) that it borders on Mariolatry, that doesn't mean that such things are approved by the Church, and certainly not official Church doctrine.

Does this help?

Yes it helps very much

I'm asking these questions coz i'm from the Philippines and i see sometimes a fanatical approach to what you say is Mariolatry and not only to to her but also the infant Jesus, etc.

Thanks for clearing up that it's in the low list of practices, I think here in my country they got it the other way around

I'm comparing Catholicism here and everywhere else.

Thanks Wols!!!

patriarch will become famous soon enough
Am willing to be corrected on this, but my understanding is that the approval of any apparation only goes to this extent: There is nothing in it contrary to faith or morals.

And such a statement would never be made until after the appartitions stop. Since those at Medjugorge are ongoing, no approval is possible for the time being.

That being said, Fatima and Lourdes esp enjoy favor in the Church, Fatima esp in this pontificate. It's fair to say that this pope has a very strong devotion to our Lady of Fatima.

Moreover, the First Saturday devotions in many parish churches reflects strong belief in this apparition in particular.

Mary is dead in the grave awaiting her resurrection. The Mary of the apparitions is a demonic/satanic deception.
