If you want it to be authentic, don't put junk like mayonnaise in it.
I coarsely mash the avocados and stir in fresh salsa (draining it in a slotted spoon, if it is runny) until it tastes right but isn't runny. Adjust the seasonings with a little hot sauce and/or lime juice, if you like. Very simple.

This is one I like to make for summertime family gatherings.
2 avocados, peeled
1 small onion, finely chopped (approx. 2 tablespoons)
1 clove garlic, minced
1 medium ripe tomato, chopped
juice from one lime
salt and pepper to taste
Mash avacados in a medium bowl. Stir in onion, garlic, tomato and half of the lime juice. Season to taste with salt, pepper and remaining lime juice. Refrigerate at least 1/2 hour before serving.

Weird - I'm eating homemade guacamole dip right now! I used a recipe very similar to Ms De's. My hints are to find the perfect avocados at the store (not too mushy, not too firm). Make sure the onion, tomato and garlic are finely chopped. I also use a bit of chili powder to give it extra spice.
Oh and I have no idea if it's authentically mexican or not, but it's yummy! Use corn chips instead of flour tortilla chips - that will help!
