Atheism and fasting....

After giving up religion, atheists try giving up something else for Lent | Religion News Service

So it does not surprise (me) when I see people under 30 who identify as atheists and yet are curious about the religious beliefs and practices of their peers, Stedman said. I think this is a trend, that we are going to see more interactions between religious believers and atheists and I think well also see more borrowing from the religious traditions. Link, the Boston Humanist whos giving up alcohol, agrees. She said she is distancing herself from organized atheism because of the hostility she feels it exhibits towards religion.
I think there is definitely a transition going on, she said. A lot of younger atheists are saying, I dont believe in God either, but I dont understand why you are foaming at the mouth about it.
Interesting article .... Atheism and lent...

Even the demons fast say out spiritual fathers... yeah sure they got no body and they do not eat at all...hehe

What can be greatest than "eating and drinking nothing"? Thus the devil will lead us to believe it is the ONLY way to salvation(?) or that is all it takes to do during fast ...but we know that is NOT true at all...

Also what is up with the atheists borrowing all "benefits" from the Christians.... is Humanism equal to Atheism or non related?

I think that the new trend is an opportunity by God to bring our youth back to the faith...It is up to us to let them know about the root of fasting, the rule of fasting the why and hows about it.... Maybe then we could touch their heart and mind to realize that indeed there is a God out a there who cares for us!
Just things to ponder...

I think there are always people in every younger generation with a spiritual hunger. I tend to think anyone who may fast in humility & good will & not pride or deceit, is drawing towards God. If we can convince any that God who became man ( & not just some decent man) told us to pray, fast, & give alms, there might be much to celebrate.

Interesting. As far as I'm aware, Atheism and Secular Humanism, as a religion, are connected. And protected under the U.S Constitution - regardless of how much they may deny it. Secular Humanism is the same as atheism in that they both deny Higher beings/God and see man as the center. I've seen the same with a lot of atheists seemingly being against religion/religious practices - and yet they still demand them in differing ways. They even have atheist chaplains now as well ( #26 /#28 ) - and it seems that what occurs is the reality that man was made a Spiritual Being ....being unable to escape the need for expression on that, regardless of whether he denies it ( #82 ). It is programmed into his make-up and ignoring the Lord simply means he finds other ways of expressing it.

It could be a good way of reaching out if noting to others that what they're looking for is already found in Christ

There are benefits to fasting that are more practical. For instance, if everyone gave up meat and dairy for lent (Orthodox & non) think of all the food we'd save, and possibly the pollution we'd cut down on. Not to mention vegan diets can be very healthy for you.

And then there's the simple reason of acquiring greater self-control.

Also, Pascha makes you appreciate meat/dairy more, since you haven't had either for 40+ days. Otherwise, it'd just be another regular fest in people's minds.

But on that note; do I think this is a growing trend? Not really, I doubt it.
Although the the number of agnostics seems to be growing over the number of atheists, which might mean something.

I think it also is because man is inherently a spiritual being, so even atheists will try to fill in that void with some kind of philosophy or practice.

Yes, I think of those folks who do not believe in God, thirsting for Him without realizing it because as Fr. Tom Hopko said in one podcast I listened to a few years ago, said that everyone was created to worship God, and if they aren't worshiping Him, they're worshiping something else. It's in us.

Atheism is the lack of belief or lack of belief in a god There are also those who say atheism is not a religion But there is freedom to explore it
