"The Bible" begins on the History channel March 3rd

A 10-hour miniseries title "The Bible" begins this Sunday, March 3rd, on the History channel.

When I hear of such productions I always approach them with skepticism. But in this case it sounds like it's respectful and well-done.

In fact, the entire series has been previewed by CMI (Creation Ministries International) and has received a glowing review. They say God as creator is a theme that runs through the series.

I hope to see it despite CMI's endorsement! ;-)

(That is, just because "creation" is in their ministry title, I assign to them no special competence in assessing a TV drama about the Bible. And Creation.com suffers the infamy of that embarrassing "15 Questions for Evolutionists" campaign. Absolutely appalling as well as dishonest.)

Yeah, I noticed that article. I like CMI and find myself reading their articles a lot. If they say it's good, then perhaps my fears were a bit premature. I mean let's face it, HC usually isn't that great on biblical history.

Also kinda looking forward to the new Vikings series afterward, but that may be a bit off topic.

Now that I've seen the first installment of THE BIBLE mini-series, I can say that I'm shocked that a conservative group like CMI would endorse it. THE BIBLE is typical Hollywood "drama hype" where the actual Bible story is riddled with fictional nonsense and even artificial elements from past Hollywood epics which covered the same ground. Example: It depicts Moses as having a terrible rivalry with Pharaoh's son and then he later comes back to face that son as the reigning Pharoah. LOTS of rubbish like that.

I have strong disdain for movies that corrupt the telling of history---because once people see something on screen, they are likely to remember that fiction as if it were history. THE BIBLE is full of such fiction.

I'm fine with some "sprucing up" of the drama to make a good story---but not when it simply fictionalizes the Bible. Roma Downey on the interview circuit had bragged about how they consulted Biblical scholars throughout production. Why did they bother if they weren't going to follow what the Bible says? Frankly, I expected this but the actual result was much worse than I had thought it would be.

Hmmm...who to trust? Biblical scholars or a message board poster? Gee that's a tough one.

Yeah, I just watched and holy disappointment, Batman. I'm a bit speechless. I'll have to agree with you here.

Well, actually that part was possible. It's not biblical but does't contradict the Bible. Moses was raised by pharaoh's daughter. I'm just thinking of all the other parts that couldn't have happened. Kids on the ark? Lot telling Abram he was leaving when it was actually Abram's idea. The angel that went to Sodom bleeding from a head wound and begging Lot for help? The other angel in a sword fight with the sodomites. A lamb instead of a ram to replace Isaac (yeah, that's picking but why not use a ram? over budget?). No pillar of fire at the red sea. No refusal on the Israelites part to enter Canaan for fear of giants. I think my kid summed it up best. "The cartoon was way more accurate!"

Well, I'll just be clear, I disagree with you here.

I have to agree. Where the heck did they find these scholars?

I mean look, the Bible has plenty of amazing fantastic mind-bobbling material. Why make up new stuff that contradicts it? Follow the story and let people decide if they believe it. Man, this could have been sooooo good.

I'd be curious to here some other opinions though.

Are you naive enough to BELIEVE THE PRODUCERS when they said that Bible scholars approved of everything? Let's see: Money-loving producers or message board posters with no skin in the game? Gee that's a tough one.

I almost hate to say it but I couldn't agree more. I remember when the Passion came out Christians loved it. I couldn't sit through it. There was so much potential for drama in the trials and if it had spent some time on the Last Supper or the Resurrection Gibson might have had something. I made it as far as the scene where that 'Devil' figure was mocking Jesus at Gethsemane and couldn't stand any more.

I want to see the series but I'm kind of dreading it. I'm just hoping it's not as bad as I think it's going to be.
