I thought that he was just the Metropolitan of the area surrounding Mount Athos, since Mount Athos is directly under the Ecumenical Patriarchate, but apparently he is technically under that Patriarchate as well, and Athos itself is under his jurisdiction. The Church of Greece elects that bishop since it's just more convenient. De jure he's under the EP, but de factor he's part of the Church of Greece; an interesting position. But yes, it's very cool. I now have no excuse whatsoever to not visit the Holy Mountain the next time that I go to Greece.
