Hi, I'm Gemma and I'm 24 from manchester, England.
I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice on which version I should get as my first bible. It seems very confusing, I'm not sure where to start.
Thankyou.
I'm sure you'll get a wide range of opinions. Mine is to try the English Standard Version (I believe there is an Anglicised edition for the UK). It's accurate, reads well, and keeps the form of the KJV. Of course, the KJV remains an option...the English is archaic though.

The very best study Bible is the Old Scofield Edition of the KJV, for it has stood the purifying test of time, and any errors (which all versions of the Bible have) have been identified and explained in the margins and footnotes. You can obtain this at Bible Truth Publishers, Addison, IL (USA).
I hope you are going to a good church and if so being new to the bible I would suggest using the same version your Pastor is teaching out of. That way it is easier to listen to the sermon and follow along in your own bible without having to deal with the different wording of different versions.
Welcome to the site. As far as a Bible traslation a few things come into play. What are you looking for? A study Bible, thought for thought or word for word translation, what options? The idea of using the same Bible as your church is a good idea. My personal favorite Bible is the NLT slimline reference.

I have to say I love my New King James. If you go to a book store (or on line) and check out the same verse(s) in multiple versions, that might give you an idea of which you like best. I also LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my one year bible! It brakes the bible up into small pieces, a little old, a little new, a little psalms, and a proverb. Reading the old testament can be overwhelming, I found this very helpful. Hope you find the perfect fit for you!

I just want to say a huge thank you to all of you for your advice and for making me feel so welcome.
Thank you!
btw: I know I didn't explain very well what I was looking for in a Bible, a study Bible is essentially what I wanted. I discussed it with my pastor and settled on the ESV.
jaapottery: Thanks for the advice on looking up the same verse in different versions, that really helped too. I really feel I have found the perfect fit for me.
