Does Catholicism promote prayer to family members that have passed away?
Does Catholicism promote prayer to images?
If so, why?
As I said I am not posting this as a preparatory post to a heated debate, I truly would like to know from those who are in that faith. So your answers would be greatly appreciated.

Yes. Originally Posted by onlybygrace84 Does Catholicism promote prayer to images?
No. Originally Posted by onlybygrace84 If so, why?
With regards to the former, it may be they are praying to God to forgive whatever sins they may still have had, remembrance, asking for a sign (Some do), or that they remain by God's side for all eternity.

About the image thing, once again this is for informational purposes only I really don't want anyone thinking I'm here to start a debate, when we see videos or pictures of men and women in, oh I don't know Central America, walking over hot coals or surfaces that will cut up their body, to get to a Virgin Mary statue or whatever, is that Catholic or an offshoot denomination of sorts? I'm just really trying to understand that thing. If you don't know then that's cool. Just asking. I know a large portion of my ignorance of Catholicism is based off seeing things like that.
Thank you for your answer though...

Maybe they were asking God to hear their prayers or hoping the deceased may be listening as well.
It's the same when people pay their respects to the deceased at a grave site and they start talking as if the person is right there next to them. Could be that the area had a miracle that is recognized by the Vatican or an area where a Saint lived. They pay their respect, or it's their way of showing penance, or they may have asked for personal divine intervention and in the hopes of getting it, they grovel.
And no, these aren't offshoots of Catholicism.

No, but prayer for them is promoted. Prayer asking the saints to pray for us is also encouraged. Originally Posted by onlybygrace84 Does Catholicism promote prayer to images?
No, but prayer before the cross, or before art work depicting religious themes is encouraged by many. As far as I am aware nobody prays to a painting or to a statue. Paintings are just art work, statues are just art work. There'd be no point in praying to art work bacause it can't hear you and it can't do anything for you, it is, after all, just inanimate art work. | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | | | |
