On a slightly similar note, cattle grids (think they're called cattle guards or stock gaps in the US) in the UK are all fitted with ramps to let hedgehogs out when they fall in.

My thoughts also. At least the pair with the ladder were not total idiots. Note the lady stayed in the truck bed and they droped the ladder and got away. I'm thinking the driver would have sped away if momma tok a step towards them.
