Hey everyone, I have tried in vain to get an answer on this on a different site but nobody will give me a clear answer. That said, is smoking in excess grave matter? I don't think it is because the Catechism does not say it is grave matter. Here is what the Catechism says: Originally Posted by Catechism of the Catholic Church 2290 The virtue of temperance disposes us to avoid every kind of excess: the abuse of food, alcohol, tobacco, or medicine. Those incur grave guilt who, by drunkenness or a love of speed, endanger their own and others' safety on the road, at sea, or in the air.
As you can see, it only says that the virtue of temperance disposes us to avoid every kind of excess which includes tobacco usage. However, it does not say anything about using tobacco in excess as being grave matter.
So, I would really appreciate your input on this. Thanks!

Thanks, God Bless
BTW, glad your modem is working. |

Hi Renewed. I appreciate your input and no offense intended but I am primarily looking for input from a Catholic perspective and that is, of course, because I am Catholic.

I did not ask whether lung cancer was grave or not. I asked whether or not smoking in excess is grave matter.
Looks like I'm not going to get a real answer in this thread either.

Of course they are enough for me. However, I am addicted to cigarettes. I am severely addicted to them. I want to stop smoking and I have tried several times but I have failed each time. And yes, I have used the nicotine patch and lozenges. There are no nicotine addicts support groups around here for me to attend and I cannot take medication which reduces the cravings because it would contraindicate my anti-depressants.
