Just curious what you all think of the idea that global warming is punishment for our sin of neglecting the environment. Whether you interpret that literally or metaphorically, I think it rings true. With all this heat lately, i can't help but wonder if it is a way of God telling/warning us to stop.

I definitely think it's the unfortunate consequences of our abuse, exploitation and neglect of our environment—but I'm not so sure that it's outright punishment. I have a hard time accepting any theories that say any sort of natural disaster or negative climate shift is the result of direct divine retribution on mankind. This isn't to say that God couldn't intervene, merely that I don't think that's what's happening.
I think of it as similar to when a parent tells their kid not to run around the pool cause they will get hurt, well the kid rebelliously runs anyway. Then they slip, fall and get scraped up or twist their ankle. The result wasn't the parent pushing the child down so they got hurt, but merely what follows a rebellious action from someone who knows better. The parent knew that the water that had splashed out of the pool and onto the surrounding cement would make it slippery and much more likely to cause someone to fall down.
Mankind was designed to care for this Earth, not to rape it and neglect it, but we have and now we're reaping the results. Fortunately I don't think it's too late, at least if we continue to ramp up R&D into alternative energies and cut down on our Co2 emissions, as well as replacing what we take (at least of the resources that we have the ability to replace).

I agree. I don't think it's too late. I shudder to think how our response might be delayed if global warming/climate change had a positive effect on mankind's endeavors (perhaps by creating more temperate weather rather than undesirable extremes).

Yeah definitely, no doubt if there were noticeable positive impacts (even in minute areas) our societies would continue to fund and support the continued practice and use of them until there was nothing left but a smoldering lump of coal orbiting the sun.

I think it's the same kind of silliness as thinking hurricanes, tornadoes or earthquakes are punishment for sin.
But if this summer's heat wave is punishment for sin, my part of the country, the northwest corner of it including the Seattle area, must not be sinful! We're only this week having our first full week over 70 and sunny. We were calling last month Junuary and wondering if we were going to get any summer at all!
